Free actions

By Mr Ruffles, in X-Wing Rules Questions

1. If a TIE Defender does a 3-5 speed maneuver and goes over a rock will it still get the free evade action?

2. Can you take linked actions off of getting a free action? IE - Rebel Lando does a blue maneuver and gives a free action to a x wing who has the foils closed. Can he focus as the free action and then take the linked action boost?

I'll supplement. A rock (techincally, Asteroid): YES! A Debris Cloud: No . The reason is that you'll gain the stress from the debris before you've finished executing your maneuver, and you can't take free actions while stressed.

If we're talking 2e here, and it seems we are, technically there is no longer any such thing as a 'free' action. All actions function the same way, regardless of source.

Forgetting the 1e 'free action' terminology helps make some of these interactions clearer. The second question, for example, can be broken down in two ways:

1) A linked action means if you perform the first action, you may perform the second afterwards.

2) Lando lets another ship perform an action.

Therefore, if a ship uses Lando to perform the first part of a linked action, it is absolutely no different from them performing the action as part of their 'perform action step'. They have simply performed a focus action, and can link off that as allowed by the linked actions on their upgrade bar.

Thanks all.
