RAC with Vader crew

By xbeaker, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Vader's crew card states: " At the start of the Engagement Phase, you may choose 1 ship in your firing arc at range 0-2 and spend 1 [force] . If you do, that ship suffers 1 damage unless it chooses to remove 1 green token."

If I am using RAC with Vader crew, and I have turrets aiming out the sides and have a torp loaded, do I have a 270 arc in which to trigger Vader? Without the Torp, it is obviously only the 2 90's. But since I could fire a torp out the front, does that now count as a firing arc?

This is from the rules reference, page 4:

A ship’s firing arcs include all shaded arcs on the ship’s ship token plus all [turret] arcs, if any.

• If an upgrade card gives a ship a [turret] arc or primary weapon with a specified arc, those arcs are also firing arcs

Note that no where does it say the arc with a torpedo is a firing arc. You get firing arcs from two sources: primary arcs (which are either shaded or an upgrade (see Moldy Crow title)), or [turret] arcs where the turret is pointed.

I believe your front arc only becomes a firing arc for the purposes of launching the torpedo. For the purposes of Vader, he looks at where your ship's actual arc/s are, either printed or mobile. I'd be inclined to think that you only have the side arcs in that case.

but good news - the side arcs are actually a little bigger than 90 degrees each, so you're actually covering close to 190-200 degrees of your base!

This feels like an accidental omission and I am really hoping they either clarify this, explicitly state non-turret special weapon arcs do not count as firing arcs, or correct in a future revision of the rules reference because currently I can see this confusing a lot of people and sparking needless debate at official and unofficial events.

they did explicitly state that. they explicitly stated that your firing arcs are your primary arcs as shaded and any turret arcs. They did not have to say your primary arcs are not the unshaded arcs and where your turrets are not pointed any more than they do not have to say firing arcs are not created by missiles.

I would have preferred if they had said firing arcs do not include any fixed arcs added by upgrades. As it stands, there is bound to be confusion because some people will think a firing arc includes any arc you can fire a weapon from (which is a reasonable inference from the term "firing arc"), even though the rules do not match that interpretation. If it was explicitly stated then everyone would know that is the rules as intended instead of thinking the designers forgot that a front arc (or bullseye arc) weapon may actually add an arc in addition to the primary weapon's arc(s).

They may not need to explicitly state it, but doing so could reduce rules confusion and prevent potential disputes with TOs.

It's included int he clarification on Firing Arc in the RR

So Moldy Crow add a primary weapon firing Arc so that counts, a torp does not so it doesn't. That's about as explicit as the rules are going to get on it really.
