I don't like the new X-Wings

By IndyPendant, in X-Wing

There. I said it.

The open/closing gimmick doesn't work well. The Saw's version doesn't even open and close properly, it's stuck in a sort of pathetic halfway mode, and in order to fix the problem I apparently have to dismantle it, carve it with a knife, then reassemble and glue it back together. Yeah, that's a disaster just drooling for me to attempt it. The 2.0 X-Wing opens and closes fine--but just picking the thing up to move it can cause the wingy bits to close wrong, and then it's stuck on a silly-looking tilt!

I was happy with my non-moving X-Wings, dagnabbit! They looked plenty cool enough on their own. 1.0 gameplay was totally borked, the X-Wing model wasn't. Now it is. I just can't enjoy flying these new loosely tilted or gummily misshapen messes. Bah!

/rant off

I knew this was going to be the case the instant people spotted that they closed, but everyone was just so super-ga-ga over moveable s-foils.

Agreed, I threw the 2.0 xwings in foam and use 4 1.0 xwings. Not a fan at all.

I also prefer the 1.0 models, along with a token to indicate the s-foil position. It's not really a problem, I have plenty!

I fixed my Saw's model, it was a bit scary since I hadn't done something like that before, but worked out ok.

I own precisely one flappy X-Wing (Core Set), and it's seen one game in which the wings refused to stay open when it moved. I'll be sticking with 1.0 X-Wings (which I've already repainted) and S-Foil tokens.

Opening S-Foils was a nice idea, but it's not entirely practical.

The rotating Fang on the other hand? I want three!

It would be quite easy to fix the tilted body problem - at least in principle. This may be something the Painting and Modding group need to work on, but if each wing is made so it cannot over-rotate, the only odd things the model could do would be to have one wing open and the other closed.

I can't say I'm an expert, though, I haven't even opened one of the new X-wings yet ?

Moving parts on models this small are always going to be tricky. Yeah, the Saw's models definitely had issues (just like the first batch of Lambda shuttles had before them). I used the Back to Dials video guide to fix mine, and now they work great. It's not difficult to do so long as you're careful and patient.

The core set T-65 is fine for me though. It's a cool little mechanic and the flat profile with wings closed helps storage.

I like the new X-Wings. You can always stick a dab of glue on there to fix them in place if you want, while there’s no easy way to turn a fixed one into a moving one.

Agreed, my flappy wing X-Wing went straight to the trade bin.

Somewhat related note, I was actually excited to have some ties in darker gray but surprised to discover the gray they used doesn't seem to match any other ship. Is this expected? I was thinking they'd be a bit more blue like the bombers or maybe the darkness of strikers but they are really very dark.

I just leave them open, and use a double sided acryllic s-foils token to indicate the position.

To make sfoil tokens, take those z-95 and xwing dial inserts found in the conversion kit

Glue em together

Sfoil tokens!

I checked mine from the 2nd edition Core Set against the TIEs in the Imperial Assault Carrier - no noticeable difference.

Thanks for checking, I don't have the Assault Carrier so I was curious about that.

Luckily for me, I have 7 of the old ones I can keep using.

The new x-wing model sucks. Like the app...

A little Scotch tape worked for me; when I took apart my Saw's T-65 to "de-gunk" the mechanism inside, it worked, but it was then as flappy-winged as my Core T-65.

I put a tiny amount of clear tape (NOT masking tape, just clear gift-wrapping tape) on the peg which couples with the other wing element , and reassembled. It's just enough friction to keep the wings in place, open or closed.

All that said, I prefer my original T-65 models and repaints. The moving foils are a cool idea but too inconsistent to depend on for visual cues as to whether they are deployed or not. I rather like @ficklegreendice's idea of using ID tokens.

Is there someone who makes acrylic s-foil tokens? I usually get my tokens from curled paw but I see they don't make any.

@IndyPendant (or anybody else) if you dislike them that much, I’d be happy to trade you some fixed-wing X-wings in exchange for your flappy X-wings. I even have some sweet S-foil tokens I made on my 3D printer that actually open and close that I’ll toss into the deal. :D

EDIT: Heck, I’d even pay the shipping costs. PM me.

What's the problem here, that glue can't fix?

Rotating Fangs ftw!

Is there a difference besides the flappy wings? The new y wing model looks great compared to the old one for example, does the new x wing have anything going for it besides the new s foils?

Buy The Same Token has one for sale. I'm hoping they make a T-70 variant when Wave II drops. I also love their black series tokens, shame their S-Foil token isn't.

i've got some 1st ed x-wings that i'd trade for some moving 2nd ed ones if anyone is interested.

It's a slight different paint job.

But not Blue Squadron :(

We need Blue Squadron with static s-foils!! (insert FFG face-palm).

I will gladly trade my v1 X-wings for v2 x-wings!

What's this "we" business?
