New Hero Excitement!

By Hepitude, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Is anyone else really excited to try out these new heroes? There's so many builds to try out with the Baron! I was also really surprised he gets his condition when set up as a unit upgrade. Giving Ardus some new swords is going to be sweet too! I'm so excited! Can't wait to get these guys painted and into some games.

Yes. I got to play against embedded VorunThul (Brutal 1) last night. It's interesting to see a very threatening reanimate block. I haven't run BaronZ yet, but I intend to give it a try sometime soon.

Having played against Vorun'thul a few times, he seems like an absolute pleasure to pilot. Mobile, dangerous, and durable. Waiqar players are in for a good time.

I'm still trying to figure out Zachareth. I haven't played with Master of Subterfuge or Greyhaven Runelore yet, but Nerekhall Training is definitely great. Green is very much his colour - shooting AND marching/reforming/shifting is excellent action economy - but I've found him slow and clumsy to maneuver. In spite of his strong early initiatives, he's not very good at getting the charge off, and quite lousy at flanking. Casually dealing 10 wounds to defense 2 units in one swing DOES seem valuable though, doesn't it.

He needs a lot more table time, that's for sure.

Has Baron champion upgrade card be posted or shown? I feel like I havetlnt seen figure pr both uniques but maybe missed it

Barron as a champion lets you swap a die for white, and lets you get either condition card.

So lets say you put him in a 6 tray unit of heavy crossbows and go to town. Dialing up a shoot and skill, you could deal 18 damage with the shooting, and then 16 damage with the fire rune.

And shoot into combat.

And reform after destroying a unit in combat.

Ardus is near the archers with the master crafted and the reanimates with the duskblade. He can spend his free surge for either a hit (2 damage) or to drop the defense of his opponents by 1 (or more).

When he dials up a hit, he can do up to 12 damage, or 10 damage to a defense 2 target. Vorunthul lets you swap red for white, making it easier to get those surges so that the dusk blade triggers.

This set up lets Ardus 1 shot any hero. Defense 5 Hawthorn? Dial surge, add surge, roll double surge and double hit. Drops defense from 5 to 1, then does 4 damage killing him.

Ardus IxErebus [37] 1x1
Dimodian Blades [5]
Ardus Fury [1]
Total Unit Cost: 43

Reanimate Archers [18] 2x1
Combat Ingenuity [6]
Master-Crafted Weapons [4]
Total Unit Cost: 28

Reanimates [35] 3x2
Fallen Hero [4]
Blighted Vexillum Bearer [3]
Aggressive Drummer [5]
Vorunthul the Cursed [8]
Combat Ingenuity [6]
The Duskblade [8]
Total Unit Cost: 69

Ardus is capable of some really big damage. The problem with Ardus in every game I've played against him (as Daqan) -- is he seems to eat a cavalry charge or a big ranged attack and simply die. He so rarely gets to attack it seems.

Well LordV was an absurdly irritated wrecking ball in our two games Friday night.

In one one game I tried him with regen and Dimorian Blades. He killed a 2 tray of Darnati, then warped onto Aliana’s flank and one shot her. Then he left with no unit ever having a real shot against him. Game two he brought Shield of Margath. He took out 2 2x1 Darnati and 2 2x1 Deepwoods. Without his Vampire unique he would have died, but he regenerated two wounds through the game.

Havent seen Baron on the table.

Between LordV and PrinceF, looks like people complaining about Ravos can take a break. LordV is far more infuriating to catch than Ravos will ever be. He’s also far more durable when you get down to practical application.

Which build of lord V did you prefer?

I'm considering Fortuna's and regen with the blades on a small death knights unit

I need more games to pick a favorite. I still haven’t tried his mind control unique.

At first blush, I like Dimorian on him the most, but not as much as I like Dimorian on a 2x1 Death Knights. I tried that game 2. That unit didn’t do much as Jukey created a death ground around terrain that I refused to approach right away. Still, what did happen looked promising

Ardus plays best as the counter charge in a blight factory. Defense 3 is a lot harder to kill when you aren't rolling dice.

Archers with combat ingenuity, carrion lancers, and Blighted vexillum banners.

I haven't bought them quite yet, but I'm excited to kill some this week! ;)

Yeah that's the challenge with Ardus, he really needs to be a counter charger, and yet his dial is *all* early. I guess he should probably wait a full turn?
