General impressions after six games with four lists

By Kleeg005, in X-Wing

After last night, I've had six games of 2E with four different Scum lists. I've played against some of the newest net-listed hotness (5x Barrage Rockets), homebrewed FSR, attempts at recreating favorite 1E lists (Han/Miranda), and Scummy jank. I've run Scum, Nym + miniswarm, Asajj + Fangs, Moralo/Palob/Y, and one which fared so poorly that I appear to have banished it completely from my memory. General impressions then:

1) Large bases are...not good. Unless you are facing off against other large base-based lists, in which case it feels like a dogfight between large bases. But as soon as a large base is outnumbered, it's as good as dead at this time. (Excepting maybe Dash - I've not seen him played yet.) Part of the reason for this is tied into point number two.

2) Upgrades are...unimpressive. There are certain pilots who can exploit certain upgrades, but on the whole they just don't seem to be anywhere near as important or effective as Pilot and Ship abilities. Especially Modification, Talent, and Force upgrades. This means that ships that have many upgrade slots - which implies that they live and die on their upgrade suite - currently feel unimpressive. I'm looking at you, large bases.

3) Scummy jank is struggling against Imperial and Rebel synergy. Scum against Scum has been a **** of a lot of fun, and pulling off the dirty tricks just feels *right*. But otherwise, a half-competent player with a synergy-driven list feels like a badly uphill battle.

4) Many ships are still reduced to effectively single-Pilot frames. Not that the other pilots aren't necessarily viable, but one pilot in particular is *SO* much stronger that why would you bother? Looking at you, Luke, Vader, Guri, Palob, Boba, Asajj (okay, that's mostly Scum, because they are what I know best).

Wow. Okay, as I read back through this, I see how much my current impressions are colored by my last game last night. Which was against our local WAAC guy who has recreated a gross FSR variant. 2E is *good*, and in such a healthier place that 1E has been in for a very long time. It's early days and things will change. And there are still parts of the community who are...difficult.

Ah-ha! And here is my justification for whinging like this. If we don't whinge on about the things that feel broken, FFG won't use their new-found powers to alter and balance those things. Ha! I'm helping! Please let me have that?

Thanks for letting me whine and vent a little. I've considered just deleting this - am still considering doing so - but I honestly hope that someone from FFG reads these fora and uses information like this to make the tiny tweaks needed to really bring to the height of clear, ringing perfection. And no, I don't generally have unreasonable expectations. Why do you ask?

ive actually been using the majority of the imperial pilots, lambda notwithstanding. Vader's cost pushes him off the auto-take for me.

i have to agree with the upgrades thing. Crew can be pretty mean, but most of the other upgrades are pretty meh for the price. I find myself trying to squeeze barebone multiple ships more than deck the crap out of 2 ships and have a third filler like i did in 1.0.

Large bases do suck. Mediums seem fine imo though. All the large bases have 0-1 agi and are instead high health, but its not proportional at all. I think they need to put a discount on upgrades for large bases, a 120pt ship should beat the snot out of any other single ship, not just barely come out on top 1v1 and get absolutely crushed 2v1 (especially when the 2 are still less than 120pts combined)

I’ve had good luck with almost every x wing pilot. Sure Luke is better, but he’s significantly more expensive. Deadman Ps1 X’s are super-effective versus swarms.
