Advanced Targeting Computer

By Icelom, in X-Wing Rules Questions

"Advanced Targeting Computer: While you perform a primary attack against a defender you have locked, roll 1 additional attack die and change 1 'Hit' result to a 'Crit' Result."

I would just like to confirm my understanding around this. for example can you:

1. Roll attack dice, target is locked so +1 dice gets rolls
2. Turn a rolled 'hit' to a 'crit'
3. Spend target lock to reroll dice

To me, this makes complete sense I was just wondering if I was missing something in the timing for the conversions or rolling that would not let you do this.

Thanks,

You can do this if you want.

More often that not though this will be combined with Fire Control System so you lose the ability to spend the lock again, and can keep it for later.

Agreed - there is at least one quick build for the TIE/x1 which lacks Fire Control System, so it's worth noting, though.

How about this then. Can you:

1. Roll attack dice, target is locked so +1 die gets rolled

2. Get all 'eye' results

3. Spend focus tokens to turn 'eyes' to 'hits'

4. Turn a rolled 'hit' to a 'crit'

Is this legit? Can you interrupt the ATC text to spend that token and get a hit that you didn't get straight up or does it have to be completed before moving on to the modifying dice step?

Yes. Your dice mods can be resolved in whatever order you like. The only thing you can't do is use the lock to reroll then change up to the crit.

Hmm ok. Can you do the same with proton torpedo then?

Roll dice

spend focus

change hit to crit?

And not able to use the lock to reroll then change one of those hits to a crit?

The lock has not relevance in this case, you can use it to reroll if you want, in whatever order you want.

Lets say you rolled all blanks with your initial roll. If you use the lock to reroll the dice, do you still get change a hit to a crit after that?
Or since you used the lock to reroll you cant change a hit to a crit any more.

If you don;t have the lock any more you can't change the hit to a crit.

With Advanced Targeting Computer, you have the following abilities:

  1. When you attack a locked target, roll +1 attack dice.
  2. If you have that target locked, change a hit into a crit.

So, you can do that second effect whenever you want, as long as the condition is met. You can spend a focus token before or after. You can keep the lock, or spend it AFTER converting one result. But if you spend the lock, you won't be able to activate ability #2.

Say you roll a range 1 attack with a target lock and focus token, for 4 dice total (base 2 + range 1 + ATC). Your results come up with a disappointing focus-focus-blank-blank. You could:

  1. Do nothing.
  2. Spend the focus token to convert all focus results.
  3. Spend the focus token to convert all focus results, then use ATC to convert one hit to a crit.
  4. Spend the focus token to convert all focus results, then spend the lock to reroll the 2 blanks.
  5. Spend the focus token to convert all focus results, use ATC to convert one hit to a crit, then spend the lock to reroll the 2 blanks.
  6. Spend the lock to reroll the 2 blanks.
  7. Spend the lock to reroll the 2 blanks, then spend the focus token to convert all focus results.

8: have FCS equipped, reroll 1 blank, then spend the focus and turn a hit to a crit.

Primary attack only (this is specified on the TIE Advanced X1 pilot cards), the extra die and changing 1 hit to 1 crit are not optional as per the Card Interpretation section of the Rules Reference (unless "may" is stated in the ability it must be done as stated if required conditions are met):

However, order is up to the person doing the modding, and precedent from 1e suggests that the attacker can choose to do things that make future mandatory effects impossible like this.

Yeah, that just means some of my options weren't eligible:

(This list, of course, ignores situations that include Fire Control System, or intentionally detrimental play styles like spending a lock to reroll the 2 focus results instead of the 2 blanks)
