Decloak Medium/Large Ship

By drazen90909, in X-Wing Rules Questions

In the Rules on page 17, its says that a medium/large ship decloaking: "It must choose to Boost or Barrel Roll with the 1 Forward template. If I choose to Barrel Roll for the Decloak, do I use the narrow edge (like when doing a Barrel Roll Action) or do I use the long edge? The Decloak section doe not specify which.

The current best understanding is that you roll like a small based ship would, using the short edge, but it's not 100% explicit.

when you decloak, you barrel roll or boost. so you follow the rules for those types of movement.

When a medium or large ship barrel rolls, substitute “long edge” for “narrow

edge” in the above description.

I suspect this is RAW, but not RAI.

Small-base ships (other than Echo) decloak by performing a boost or barrel roll using a 2-straight template. Following the rules for boosting or barrel rolling, that means you put the short edge of the template against the ship, then move accordingly.

Medium- and Large-base ships decloak by performing a boost or barrel roll using a 1-straight template. Following the rules for boosting or barrel rolling, that means you put the long edge of the template against the ship, then move accordingly.

There's no reason to believe that the way you barrel roll changes; decloaking simply alters the template that you are required to use, for small ships.

The reason to believe is that the clear RAI is that Decloaks are longer than normal barrel rolls, and that;'s not the case for large based ships under these rules.

I'm maybe 90% sure the intention is for it to be the short edge.

But it currently isn't by RAW.

E: on reflection, it could be intended that M/L decloaks are simply not as long, relative or absolutely.

I'm amused that the image shows the back and forward positions in illegal positions in the image.

How are they illegal?

"Lift the ship off the play surface, then place the ship with the hashmark on the side of the base aligned to the front, middle, or back of the other narrow end [long end for medium and large bases] of the template."

The diagram demonstrates exactly how medium and large bases are supposed to execute barrel rolls.

Huh. I thought it was front/back aligned. Good to know.

Yeah. Until you get used to them, medium-base ship barrel rolls just look WONKY.
