Tips for beginners

By konbox, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Hello,

Few days back i saw a couple of poeple playing X-wing in my local shop and it got me excited. I have decided i'm ready to start playing but i've got a small number of questions at first.

1) What is the difference between 1.0 and 2.0 ?

2) What to buy to start playing ? Do i need some accesories ?

3) Is it possible to mix 1.0 and 2.0 miniatures ? Do i have to get them all ?

4) Why version 1.0 got more elements to buy ?

5) How to buy stuff more efficient keeping in mind that old miniatures are on discount ?

6) Is there any F.A.Q for current version of the game ?

7) Can i play some scenarios / group battles or it is skirmish only ?

8 ) What is the best advice you can give me ?

Sorry for the inconvenience caused by me posting this in english.

1) What is the difference between 1.0 and 2.0 ?

The rules have been cleaned up and ships from earlier waves that had been left behind by "power creep" are brought into line.

2) What to buy to start playing ? Do i need some accesories ?

As a new player you need to start with a 2nd Edition Core set depending on what's going on in the local shop you'd be playing at. More on this in question 3.

3) Is it possible to mix 1.0 and 2.0 miniatures ? Do i have to get them all ?

Yes the actual stands and miniatures for most ships (some ships get a new base size in 2nd Ed.) can be used in either version. As a new player you have the option of going with picking up a used 1st Ed. collection and playing 1st Ed. and getting the Conversion Kits to play with those ships in 2nd Ed. You also can just start "from scratch" with 2nd Ed. expansions. 1st Ed. products will be on shelves a bit longer but no new stuff for 1st Ed. is likely to be produced.

4) Why version 1.0 got more elements to buy ?

1st Ed. has been out for many years. 2nd Ed. released officially last week.

5) How to buy stuff more efficient keeping in mind that old miniatures are on discount ?

Hard to say. It depends entirely on how much stuff you want, how fast you want it, how big your budget is, if you just want to play Luke versus Vader or tournaments. See also my response to three.

6) Is there any F.A.Q for current version of the game ?

Not yet a 2nd Ed. F.A.Q.

7) Can i play some scenarios / group battles or it is skirmish only ?

Yes. Usually just one-on-one but 1st Ed. expansion often provide scenarios and there are many such things made by fans.

8 ) What is the best advice you can give me ?

That was pretty much it.

Okay that doesn't look like I thought it would.

messed up the tags and still could get it right

Your english is just fine.

1) 2.0 is a little more expensive. They broke the phases out a little bit, but basically 2.0 is a rebalancing patch. If you fly early waves of 1.0 vs. other early wave 1.0 ships, then 2.0 isn't necessary. However, if you are trying to fly later waves of 1.0 vs early waves of 1.0 you will definitely want 2.0. Late 1.0 waves are broken.

2) 2 cores is what I recommend. If you are going 2.0, and if you haven't started collecting there is no reason you shouldn't, then get two of the 2.0 cores.

3) You can mix the versions if you purchase the FFG faction conversion kits. This can be cost prohibitive if you are just starting out, you would be better off just buying the 2.0 expansions at this point.

4) 1.0 has been in production for 6ish years. Because FFG has added new factions in 2.0 the number of 2.0 ships will likely exceed 1.0 within the next year or so.

5) There are faction specific conversion kits. However, due to the nature of their components, you would have to buy a lot of discounted ships to get your money's worth.

6) Yes, there is a FAQ for 1.0 here: https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/4e/f0/4ef05c3f-2170-4bb0-9ac8-c5c2ff9ed83f/x-wing_faq_v441.pdf

The 2.0 FAQ can be found here under the Support section: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/x-wing-second-edition/#/support-section

There is also a link to the new rules under Support on the same page.

7) 1.0 has multiple scenarios available both in the expansions and home brewed ones on mission control. 2.0 has some escalation matches, but no scenario/objective based play.

8 ) Don't land on asteroids. They only look friendly and inviting.

Welcome to the X-Wing forums, we are happy to have you.

What are the pros, cons and differences between of each faction in game ? How many of them are there ? How should i proceed in buying after getting cores, for each mentioned army/side ?

Thank you for your warm welcome ?‍♂️

For factions there are

Rebels. Generalist ships and synergy. Pilots buff each other and the ships are good at many things

Empire. Specialists, swarms and aces. Imperial ships tend to be focused on doing one thing very well.

Scum and Villainy. Dirty tricks. Screw someone else (friend or enemy) to buff yourself. Lots of bigger ships

First Order. Not actually released yet, but soon. There are several ships that used to be imperial in 1.0, but have been split off into their own faction for 2.0. We’re not entirely sure how they will play

Resistance. Likewise, actual release should be soon, with a 2 ships that were rebel but now are their own faction. Play style is supposed to be super aces, individual pilots who are just crazy good on their own, but without the synergy of the rebels. They also have a brand new ship coming out (resistance a-wing) that won’t be in their conversion pack.

Galactic Republic. Announced but long way from release. We don’t “know” anything about playstyle, but everyone is assuming lots of Jedi pilots to use the new force mechanic

Septatists. Same as republic, we know it’s coming, but no details. Again, an assumption of lots of droid pilots.

As people have mentioned, there are conversion kits for the 3 main factions (Rebs, Imps, s&v). If you want a big collection quickly, getting one or more of those and a bunch of discounted 1.0 packs is a viable way to go. Or, if you want to go slower or money is tight, just pick up 2.0 expansions. You’ll be a bit more limited in squad selection, but you can spread out the purchases.

There are conversion kits for the FO and the Resistance coming out soon as well, but both those factions only have a few previously released ships (2 resistance and 4 FO, I think) so their conversion kits are smaller and don’t provide as much stuff. If you’re interested in those factions, probably best to simply stick with the 2.0 expansions and ignore the conversion kits. You won’t be so far behind everyone else playing those factions, and it will be a lot simpler for you to keep track of.

As as I mentioned above, the prequel factions are coming, the have been formally announced and we know a couple ships they will include, but their release is probably a year away.

I think from your use of a plural, that you are already planning on getting multiple core sets, but if you aren’t already planning that, it’s not a bad idea, especially if you want to play rebels or imperials.

When the game first came out, a lot of us bought several copies of each expansion. That proved to be seriously overkill for most of us. Unless there is a ship that you really, genuinely want to play multiples of, stick to one of each product (for the factions you collect) for a while. If FFG follows a similar pattern to how the released 1.0, you will likely end up with multiples of a lot of ships eventually anyway (Seriously, I ended up with 6 B-Wings? I don’t even play rebels. If I had exercised some restraint early on, that is at least $60 I didn’t have to spend. Multiply that by my excess a-wings, core sets, defenders, Falcons, Firesprays, etc... and it’s probably $1000 I’ve spent on this game that I didn’t need to. With that, I will just leave you this, and say that it is accurate. )
