A little off-topic...

By Stewart777, in Star Wars: Destiny

Is there any chance that FFG would ever create a game either by DC Comics (my preferred comic brand :) ) or Marvel?

I post in this particular forum because I like the gameplay mechanics of Star Wars: Destiny, but a card-only mechanic would also work.

I ask the question because there really are no decent board/card games out there that feature DC or Marvel. While there is Legendary from Marvel and Cryptozoic's Deck Building game for DC, I don't particularly like the gameplay mechanics. Apart from those two games there really is nothing decent out there.

You would think that two comics companies that have been around for so long would have the market covered by now.

Anyway, just thinking out loud and wondering whether FFG would even be interested. I ask the question fully realising that a licence is required and is a crucial part to even thinking about getting such a project off the ground.

I'm surprised you don't like Marvel Legendary - my friends and family love that one. But it's also co-operative, and best with 3-4 people, so I guess if you're looking for a competitive two player game like SWD, it doesn't fill the same role.

I haven't tried the DC Deckbuilding Game, but I've heard it's not as good as Marvel Legendary, which is why I haven't bothered.

But as you said, there are already deck building games for both DC and Marvel characters, so I doubt if anyone else will be allowed to publish any card games for either of them until they lose their licenses.

Ah so you reckon it's down to licences, rather than not having a good product to produce.

They did. It was called Marvel Heroes . It was released in 2006. I have it. We played it once, when it came out. I think I remember liking it. Don't let the number of plays mislead you. The Warcraft game is great (and my first FFG game), and I don't even remember when the last time we played that is. Oh, wait. It was pretty easy to figure out, based on one of the players that was there. It was between Fall of 2005 and Fall of 2007. ... Man it's a fun game. I digress.

I know what you mean, though. You mean more than some obscure reference that isn't even on the FFG website anymore. It's all about licensing.

Exactly this. And it applies to most of the things we'd love to see.

They had a third expansion (second full expansion) for WoW: The Board Game (not the Adventure board game, that one is different). But it got shelved indefinitely and they lost the license. I've considered getting a job in the mail room at either Blizzard or FFG, and Secret of Success'ing my way through the ranks, culminating in getting the Blizzard license back into FFG's hands. That involves a variety of things not in my skill set, though. For starters, I don't feel like I can pull off the fast elevator outfit changes.

There was the Vs system TCG. It was fantastic and challenged Magic back in the day. You can still find sealed product of it. Just don’t confuse it with Upper Deck’s new VS2PG. It’s a poor attempt at a relaunch and is absolute trash.

A comic book themed port for Destiny would be fantastic though.

Oh wow would you look at that. Didn't know about that game.

Seems there are a couple for sale on ebay. very few available though...

I don't see any. There are 12 on the geek market. Some are "like new"; the only "new" one is a French edition.

Try ebay.co.uk and on ebay.com you have to scroll down a bit.

I think my search terms were "marvel heroes board game".

Ah thanks for that, seems I'm not all that clued into all that has come and gone in terms of games...

Did a bit of searching and it seems they are still available here and there.

So, when I saw your post originally, I thought, "Do we have different eBays?"

Yes. Yes, we do. I did not see it on the one that I use.

Just checked and there are two on the US ebay but the sellers are both located in the UK :)

How about a Marvel/ DC dice game?

I was just going to mention this. It even has cards, and dice! Game just didn't catch on(at least near me) the way Destiny did. Destiny has a much more cohesive vision, much better looking product, and smoother, thematic game play. And it also addressed power creep much better than dice masters imo.

So while you maybe, one day, might see it I definitely wouldn't hold my breath.

Try looking at Keyforge. It looks fun and affordable.

Thanks, yeah I looked at Dice Masters but I thought it was strictly a dice game which isn't something I was interested in. But it seems there are cards so will have a closer look.

At the moment all my money is going into Destiny though :) but once I've gotten all the cards I want I might look at getting some of the older VS System games which seems like they might be fun to play. As far as I'm aware there are two types of the VS System though, so will have to investigate a little further.

I wanted to like this more than once for a wonderful reference, but, alas, I can only like a post once, so I am resorting to quoting you so that I can like my own quote of your quote to like it again.

I will second (?) VS system (1.0). It's an extremely well designed game, and an absolute treat for comic book fans based on how deep they draw from the books (There is an actual X-Statix team. That is nuts).

coolstuffinc.com sells singles still, and some of them will be buy one get three free (i.e. you get a playset of the card for the one price). I actually got in to the game after it was cancelled, but managed to get a collection largely through picking up the singles, so that can be a good way to start.

Well it is striclty a dice game. The cards are just there to tell you what the dice do. (This is is because each die has 3 cards that will let you play the same character in different ways)

It's basically a bag building game, you start with generic dice and you buy better dice troughout the game.

Both games fell by the wayside at my lgs. I play and like both, but I like dice masters a bit better. (more licences, no hyding all the fave chars as ultra rares)
