Frightened condition dependcy

By valvorik, in WFRP Rules Questions

So Frightened is dependent on being "engaged".

But it is imposed when failing Fear or Terror check and rolling 2 banes on first encountering a creature.

So what if you encounter creature at medium range, make and fail check, roll your 2 banes, but are not engaged?

If you only had to make check when engaging, it would read out sensibly (though this would make Fear/Terror ratings less dangerous).

A 2nd point, I like that horrific scenes etc. can have Fear and Terror checks. But since you don't "engage" them the Frightened condition really doesn't work.

Pending answers, I'm thinking Frightened should be more like: lingering condition (for encounter), the stress factor triggered by engaging creature or interacting with a scene (e.g., trying to determine what could have made injuries done to mutilated corpse). It would still be dependent in that if the source was eliminated (horrifically mutilated corpse covered over, monster slain) then the condition would end even if scene not over.

You know, I've been running this condition apparently "wrong" all along, but the way I've been using it is, once you gain the condition you keep it until you are no longer exposed to fear inducing trigger, (creature, horrific sceen, etc.) however you only suffer the negative effects of the condition (gaining more stress, fatigue) when engaged with the source of the fear, in fact I would run it that you suffer the ill effects when engaged with anything that has a fear rating when you are frightened. Now this means that you can dis-engage but remain frightened, you don't loose the frightened condition, until: A) the creature/object with a fear rating is dead/gone, or B) the end of the encounter. At the end of an encounter I would allow a new fear check if the object or creature was still around, if its not around then there is no longer a need for the status condition.

I guess I just didn't read the rules for this specific card close enough, I just read it just enough to get a useful, and in my opinion better interpretation.
