How are your 2.0 games going?

By Kehl_Aecea, in X-Wing

I haven't been this excited about the game in a long time.

My first game was after rapidly punching out some jank at my flgs launch party. Was thoroughly destroyed and loved every minute of those two games.

Since then I have squeezed another couple of games in on vassal and am both doing much better and loving how much more rewarding good game play is.

I CAN FLY KYLE KATARN AGAIN!

What more do you need?

i had a game with Deathrain, Echo, and Whisper vs Nym, Guri, and a tugboat last an hour/half before something outside turn1 died (that tugboat had boba so it was instantly in R2 of all 3 of my ships, it died quick).

Punisher was just constantly a cockblock or bomb-diverted so it never got shot at that much, or atleast never got shot by more than one thing. Both my phantoms had Gonk and shield upgrade...lol...so every time they actually took damage i just regen'd it.

Is gonk actually good?

Not sure yet actually. That game was a poor representation since the phantoms only took 3 damage between the two of them to begin with. Combination of never getting shot in the first place and my opponent's lousy dice.

Ideally, yeah since phantoms can be fast enough to escape and gonk it up. Realistically, probably not lol.

We need a kyle katarn that's actually worth flying...

...oh wait, the Hwk is possibly the single most buffed ship in the game and a combination of moldy crow + perceptive lets Kyle support without losing crucial mods?

...guess we really can't need anything more, huh?

(Yes, Kyle katarn is the ****** man, as is the Moldy Crow in general)

I'll try it then

Im really enjoying 2.0! Everything Ive flown and flown against has felt good thus far.

Yesterday we had a rough test with my wife. We only took pilots without upgrades, just to see how the new ships and pilot abilities "behave". She flew her three favorite pilots: Corran Horn, Wedge Antilles, "Prototype Filler-Dude" aka Phoenix Squadron Pilot and as this is 2.0, she added Blade Squadron Pilot. I tried with Han Solo, Kyle Katarn and Braylen Stramm.

1) Han is really cool to fly. With a ship that big it's really rewarding to fly nearby to the asteroids to get the re-roll. I flew Rey before 2.0 and for a while I had success with Boba Fett, so I have no problem in flying to have opponents in arc. I like him.

2) Kyle Katarn! By the way, if he would have a Force Rating, I am sure his "flavor text" would be "Guy with Lightsaber" (remember the bar in Nar Shadaa in Jedi Outcast) instead of "Relentless Operative". It will take a while for me to learn how to aim on the friend and the enemy alike. I'm sure Moldy Crow will help with this. Otherwise, HWK-290 fills the role of support ship in excelent way!

3) I saw some people are not really happy with B-Wings, now. I must disagree on this. From my perspective, these are very tough close-quarters fighters. They got plenty of red maneuvers, however both aces work well with stress. 1-Tallon Roll?! When B-wings got to the thick of the fighting, they are really brutal in the cluster! Which leads me to the next point...

4) Corran Horn, the investigator is still kind of outflanking end-game killer. In this game, my wife sent him on her left, closing in from the side to the cluster. With Advanced Targetting System or what is the in-build ability called, he can have double mods in first engagement and if you manage to get the enemy in bullseye (she always did), the double tap is devastating. I can immagine him with R3 Astro and Predator. It's actually better form of him from Legends then regenerating hit'n'running.

So, yesterday I got brutally wiped!

Being able to fail actions is an amazing improvement! The tension it adds, choosing if you want to take the chance on boosting or something, is really good.

I'm very excited about 2.0, I had to join these boards a couple of weeks ago as I needed an outlet for my enthusiasm. I'm two games in now and really enjoying it.

First game my son picked Lancer, Quadjumper, and StarViper based on looks ... we put Asajj and Shadow Caster on the Lancer so he could try out Force power and get some extra tractoring. I took him on with my 'Jabba-netics' experiment ... Jabba riding in a Hound's Tooth that has Contraband Cybernetics. We only were able to play a few rounds but it was Quite fun doing Red stops and actions constantly regardless of stress and the Shadow Caster + Quad Jumper actually had some nice tractoring synergy.

First full game with a coworker was last night. Super Natural Vader with an Ion Agressor, Baragge Bomber, and Sabre Squint faced off against Luke, Ion Y, Intimidating Arvel, and a Selfless B. We were going for a matchup with some classic characters and ships plus putting as much new stuff through its paces as we could (Force, Turrets, new dials and actions for various ships, ordinance, etc).

It was a nail biter and an absolute blast. Seismics were a ton of fun. Vader and Luke felt powerful and satisfying to fly. The turret implemation was great. The bomber and b-wing were work-horses. I pretty much liked everything I saw.

The only thing I'm not so sure about is this crtical hit that says all damage you take turns critical, man that was brutal. I mean, it worked in my favor but it was painful to watch. This might have been one of the worse case scenarios for it though. Luke did a Red move through a debri field and took the crit from that, right before the shooting started. I had him in my sights with Vader and the Bomber, plus I had dropped a seismic that would hit him that round ... he got absolutely wrecked. Poor Luke. Long live the Empire.

K-Wings aren't the monsters they were

Oh ... you sweet summer child.

games have been great. It's great how the emphasis of the game is back on good flying. I've seen games where the common thought was one list should destroy the other, but good flying surprised everyone. The game feels back to what it was meant to be.

My first two games have been a treat. The rust is real though last game of 1.0 was sometime before the silencer dropped. Both games I played with the same list Feroph in his Reaper and a 4 named tie miniswarm. (Howlie, Iden, Gideon, and Meeko). The first game was comical. I forgot how to fly a swarm, still managed a win through a couple of factors. First my opponent was just as rusty as me, and second those tie abillities are powerful. Also jamming Corran Horn with the reaper before blocking him felt good. Second game was a much more convincing win for me but that is down more to the performance of my dice (a few triple evades in key moments, and iden saying no to an attack that finally got through).

So far it's a blast. Tie fighters have to be respected again. With mods being much harder to get, 3 green dice with focus doesnt feel bad and 2 red dice with focus feels good. The reaper is a joy to use to jam and block. Iden's abillity is amazing. Game feels good.

Okay, to be fair, I've only gone up against K-Wings a few times and NEVER played them due to the negative stigma they had. >_>

Played an escalation game and had an absolute blast with that. Enjoyed my standard games as well, everything feels great.

Linked actions are brilliant design, they allow ships to be very unique while removing the need for the required PTL in the talent slot. You can really feel that a lot of work and thought went into second edition and I just wish half as much had gone into the squad builder.

My games are going really well so far! I played two games on launch day and then had two four rounds launch event tournaments over the weekend. A total of 10 games and I lost only one by two points! Noting that the loss was not through any TLT bs but against a punisher + 3x phantom list. Who would have thought that?!
