Forgive my ignorance. But X-Wing 2.0 got me curious about the game again after, too many, turrets where introduced in 1.0.
But since I sold my old stuff I'm getting new stuff for a new edition! Yay!
I want to get into Scum and Villainy. From the look of things I will have to buy the conversion kit from the start and then buy "old" ships?
Or will they all get repacks from day 1?
A Scum player starting now will have to convert from the get go?
Just buy the new scum stuff.
You have to buy the starter, which sucks because it doesn't have any ships for you. You can then buy the Firespray-31, Fang Fighter, and Lando's Milennium Falcon expansion packs to get a starting force without getting any conversion kits. In the LONG run, a conversion kit + first edition ships will be cheaper, since they upped the price on all expansion packs, but in the get-in-now cost, the former is cheaper.
Repacks for the other older ships will be coming in future waves.

Whops! Edits :)
If you are sure you want to go all in again and have the opportunity to pick up a scum collection for a reasonable price, that and a conversion kit will run you cheaper than buying the ships as they are rereleased. However that is quite the expense, and sticking with the new releases will allow you to play nicely. So it ultimately depends on how much you want to commit.
The official second edition format doesnt require the entire conversion kit.
Feel free to buy the 3 scum ships that have been released and a core and your good to go.
Also any rational xwing player should gladly play second edition with new or returning players like yourself instead of the conversion kit extended format. You shouldnt feel any pressure to catchup. FFG called the re-release only format “Second Edition” for a reason. The name alone makes their intentions pretty clear. It is second edition xwing.
Two skull fang fighters and a boba firespray should be reasonably good in either format so you could also go that route to. Lots of fun and all good ships I probably wouldnt regret purchasing that along with the scum falcon if i were in your position.
Edited by Boom OwlFang Falcon and Firespray is probably a list. I've not done the maths but I think you can fit it all in.

You definitely can. Probably not Fenn, but Han is fine at about 65ish so a Zealous Recruit would leave room for some toys on Boba.
It's probably a pretty solid list.
The core is a little annoying to have to buy, but it comes with plenty of useful, faction neutral upgrades + everything you need to play
Otherwise, it's as others have suggested.
Will add, however, that all current non-conversion scum products are very good options.
It's also probably worth noting that if you never intend to get Force using pilots, the Force cards from the core will have VERY high resale value, probably enough to pay for the core itself. Especially Instinctive Aim
