I have a 1.0 Firespray on order that should be here Thursday and I'm wondering what sort of prep on the model I need to do to get it ready for repainting.
Going to be repainting a Firespray
I don't normally prep them at all, just paint right over the stock scheme.
I clean them with dish soap and a toothbrush, then prime only with one thin layer.

Spray or brush?
I spray as much as possible
I have no talent with a brush, and masking compensates largely
I wash with soap and water, dry, then use Tamiya Fine Surface Primer in either white or gray to cover the whole model. Then I paint over top and Tamiya matte clearcoat after finished.
Paint types to avoid?

Not sure what to avoid, but I use Army Painter paint and have been happy with the results.
I've used Vallejo, P3 and Army Painter and they're all good quality paints and pretty similar to each other.
There are a lot of people who came up with GW paints and speak well of them but I've never tried any.
As long as you're using paint from a line meant for miniatures you should be fine.
I used to go with a spray on an accurate colour and then Citadel brushed paints and washes.
I use Testors and Model Master for polystyrene models. No issues.
And I also just paint right over the stock scheme. Actually, for the Firespray, sometimes I even just do the front, and leave the engines the stock colors or only embellish a little.
No preparation needed, just paint right over existing paint.

I agree, works almost always. I don't strip the paint or prime.
Sometimes though, there is some substance on it that makes the new paint not want to stick. So a soft cleaning run may avoid this
