First 2.0 match

By Roller of blanks, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Yesterday, I popped into a covenant tournament, but only one guy showed up, so we played a casual game for an hour or two.

His list was a Lothal rebel with Magva Yarro and the ghost title, AP-5 with phantom title, and a loaded corran with R3, FCS, Proton torps, and a talent I don't remember.

My squad was Norra with ICT, R4, and proton bombs, Lieutenant Blout with Expert handling, Kyle with jyn erso and moldy crow, and Wedge with R2, Predator, and S-foils.

Rock setup was a clustered field in the middle, his lothal and corran set up in the left corner, and I set up in the middle facing forward, with wedge set a little to the right.

First turn corran and the ghost 3 forward, corran target locks norra and wedge. Norra and kyle 1 bank towards the left, blout 2 banks and barrel rolls to the right, moving into the asteroid field. Wedge 3 forwards and boosts into the far right section of rocks.

Next round ghost 3 straights again, all of my ships 1 forward, and wedge boosts again, now facing towards the left board edge. Corran follows behind the ghost, and we're barley out of range to shoot.

Now this is where it gets weird.

Ghost 4 straights over a rock on purpose, no damage. Norra bumps with a three forward, kyle and blout have a range one shot, with blout focused. Corran 3 forwards, and my opponent is slowly sliding him across the board like money on a bribe deal, Slowly pushing the rock with the base. Starts to take a focus, until I tell him he landed on the rock, which he vehemently denied. He whips out a pocket flashlight and says there's space, I tell him it's because he pushed it. In the end we roll for it, and I win the roll, counting it as on the rock. I don't say anything, but he never rolls for damage. Wedge turns in, target locks corran and at the start of combat kyle gives him a focus.

By the end of combat, the ghost has lost its shields, Kyle loses a shield, and corran natty evades 3 hits from wedge.

Next turn Norra drops a proton bomb, which catches both the ghost and corran, who K-turn. Ghost went over debris, so is double stressed. Kyle 3 forwards, focuses and links an arc rotation, wedge 2 hard turns towards corran, and focuses. Corran is brought to one hull by wedge, but then corran Natty evades every single shot after. Corran shoots at norra, gets natural hit hit crit crit, and norra rolls a blank, +1 evade with her ability. Loses her shields and the crit is a direct hit. Ghost rolls a natrual hit hit crit blank. Norra rolls double blanks and her ability cancels one. Again, the crit is direct hit. Corran double taps and rolls natrual hit hit hit hit, meaning norra is dead no matter what. I roll anyway and get an evade, make some joking remark about getting evades when I don't need them, and the guy says, "I hate it when people blame the dice" well, now I really want to beat him. Next round kyle I straight blocks, and Blout 4 Ks. Corran does bump into kyle, and wedge talon rolls right behind corran. Corran inevitably goes down, and blout puts two hits on the ghost, which thanks to hull breach from the proton bomb, turned into panicked pilot and direct hit. During the next turn, he conceded.

TAKE-AWAYS

•If you're flying a two-ship list, don't use one as a blocker, then it's a one-ship list.

•After the ghost took the hull breach crit and was double stressed, I would've launched AP-5 and coordinated to flip it down.

•Proton bombs are DOPE

•In a meta where double mods are hard to get without stress, Kyle Katarn (and Dutch Vander for that matter) are EXTREMELY useful, especially when you have a token stack with Moldy crow to protect yourself.

•Do everything in your power to avoid taking proton torpedoes.

•Don't be a jerk to your opponent.

Sorry you had to deal with this kind of player, for what it's worth I think you handled it well by the sounds of it and taught him a lesson by the end

Well flown and in my experience once I know a player will effectively cheat I usually just avoid playing them - in this instance you were stuck but hopefully you get a more fun opponent next time. Thanks for the report!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!

I'm a local Covenant player, and I know exactly who you played against.

I'm very sorry he was your first experience at the store. Trust me when I say the rest of us are more welcoming and fun to play against. Most of us actively avoid that guy. :(

I'm sure the rest of you are fine, It's very rare to find someone like that in X-wing, and I certainly intend to playbat that store again, as everybody else were wonderful people!

@Roller of blanks just mentioning your name makes me laugh...

and cry
