Our group is somewhat large (about 8 people) so I was wondering if the beginner's set adventure had a sidebar saying "if you have more than 4 players, do X to even things out".

The Beginner box adventure only has 7 pre-generated characters in total (1 for every clan). If by 8 people you mean you the GM + 7 players then this game gives you the exact amount of pre-gen characters you need. 4 character folios come in the box and 3 are downloadable for free from the product website. The product page also contains a free downloadable sequel to the beginner box adventure. This adventure is definitely scalable. The adventure is very on-the-rails and is meant to be basic in order to slowly teach everyone the mechanics of the game and the narrative dice. Every scene in the adventure can naturally be expanded to allow everyone to roleplay. The only scenes that will need scaling are the fighting scenes and they do have a rule explaining "# of ronin enter this location. The # of ronin = 7 + number of PCs".
