PT106 vs @Roquax started now.

I ended up winning this one 6-5 with MoV 34

It was a complex battle with me as first player and Contested Outpost. I chrged into outpost and lost my flagship but managed to kill BCC Bright Hope and gravely wound Yavaris before dying. Demolisher finisher the deed with GSD2 and Gozanti holding the station for the win.

Wow that was close one! See you next round :)

Round Robin Finals Round 2!

Zamalekite v. PT106 &

Roquax v. Commander Dave

Standings after R1:

Zamalekite 8 (152)

Pt106 6 (34)

Roquax 5 (0)

Commander Dave 3 (0)

That was the longest game and slowest I have ever seen. Like 4 plus hours.

Hold my beer...

I had games lasting 6 hours

Definitely a slow game, but there was a lot going on, especially on Pt106s part as LOTS of thought was required in how to engage the RCAF. Roquax has a well defined track record of crushing almost all comers with what is one of the most successful archetypes flown by maybe it's most skilled operator. Would I expect a squadronless fleet to defeat it? Nope, so... well done PT106!

To find out if I can do any better tune in Sunday 21:30 GMT/16:30 ET for Round 2!

I must say though, I'm glad Contested Outpost isn't one of my objectives vs a fleet like @PT106's! Very curious what he'll pick.

Hopefully won't be a 4 hour game or I'm going to be one tired puppy next day!

Then round 3 we'll have RCAF vs RAF 😊

And it is done with 10-1 to me, MoV 322.

I lost a die roll, so Zamalekite chose first player and we played Contested Outpost.

I delployed Demo and ISD on two different sides of outpost, forcing him to choose his target. He went for Demo, deploying most of his fleet against him. End of round 1 I was able to threaten long range shot to his BCC, forcing his activation order and was able to catch and one-shot Yavaris round 2 with after-move shot to the side and double ram. I think that decided the game. I still lost Demo and then a second Gladiator one round later, but cleaned up the rest of his fleet with ISD, finishing it with a tabling shot to a fleeing Dodonna round 6.

Wow! Good work!

Well played @PT106! I enjoyed the game a lot despite losing. thanks for the post-match chat too. I learnt a lot from the game.

In hindsight I think the main problem was I had the wrong game plan. I should have been more cautious with Yavaris - I hadn't realised how kamikaze PT would be with Demolisher but a 1:1 exchange of those two ships hurts me a lot more than it hurts him. In that regard it was a very smart play on his part. I hadn't considered he would use a double ram on me and should have stayed further back to prevent it. Ciena also managed to slow down my squads just long enough to put me off balance and I could have done with another turn to fully get my squads in position.

Against a fleet like PT's I should have just forgotten about trying to contest the outpost and focused instead on killing ships which, for a fleet like mine with nasty squads and flimsy carriers, basically means keeping my carriers alive as the squads will inevitably do the damage given time. Also in hindsight I'm wondering about my choice to go 1st. The Demo double-tap is the stuff of nightmares but I'm not sure that it's worth a free 100 points which is what he got from the outputs tokens.

My objectives are: Precision Strike, Jamming Barrier and Solar Corona - I'm curious what you'd have picked @PT106? :)

Thanks again for a great game and @CaribbeanNinja for being a great TO.

Looking forward to my final match v @Roquax

p.s. I've got logs for all my games which I'll share at the end of the tournament and try and provide a little bit of commentary. About a third of all my Armada games have been in this tournament so it's been a great learning experience for me and hopefully I can share a few helpful tips for other new players.

Wow, nice work PT. I peeked in for a bit and saw the part where you sacrificed Demo for Yavaris. Solid trade. Your Cymoon build is really mean with the H9/Quads. I hadn’t noticed that before. Really large threat range with that.

Also, @Roquax and I will be shooting for 8pm EST tonight.

I think you had to. With me having last+first I could almost guarantee Demo for Yavaris trade with triple tap and then quickly pick up the rest of the fleet with Cymoon activating first.

I probably would've gone for Solar Corona as I saw you playing Jamming Barrier ;) so it was a big NO for me while Corona hurts me less with H9 in the fleet. I still could've risked it and grabbed Precision Strike.

EDIT: While 1:1 Demo for Yavaris trade is still very beneficial to me, in this game the real trade was Demo for Yavaris and BCC, cause I forced your activation order and killed BCC in retaliation. (I was ready to trade Demo for BCC and putting Yavaris to 1-2 hull as double rerolls are huge for those bombers and Cymoon can finish off Yavaris at long range)

@Zamalekite I think you have been fortunate to avoid the aggressive Vassal players so far. Be wary, there are quite a few uber aggressive players on vassal, more than you'll ever meet at a single tourney.

I have had fairly good luck finding folks on Vassal. Yes there are a few Aggressive players but I think that is for 2 reasons.

1. If you are on Vassel I think they expect that you know what your doing.

2. It is the whole Internet aggression issue. You are not in the same room with someone, they are likely not your friends, they have no reason to be helpful and nice. I would bet most of those folks are much different when playing in their local play groups then they are on Vassal.

Finally, when it comes to a tournament, I don't have any expectations for folks to be helpful and friendly. In that setting they can be ruthless and probably should be to an extent. If I can find folks just looking to test a list in a casual game things are usually a little different.

"Aggressive play style".....

I don't know. Every game I've played v Imperials I've had all combat ships coming at me full speed. If that's not 'aggressive' I'm scared to see what is!

I'd argue that the issue is mostly with demo being such a good counter to yavaris if you are outactivated. Rieekan would help if you had something significant to shoot in that round but it doesn't sound like you did even if you had rieekan. Activation advantage vs these lists was the main motivation while i attempted for 6 act with my lists, of course it had an issue against superior sqds like yours.

Do you think having the sqds way in front of the ships to head of demo via forcing overlap and shooting in the squad phase one round would have helped?

Consciously trading flagship ISD for Toryn/BCC GR75 flotilla ;)

That flotilla is really important, I recommend that trade to any aspiring Imperial Admiral.
