Are You Good At X-Wing?

By Boom Owl, in X-Wing

No, because I don't play enough and not at a high enough level. Not being able to travel to most events sucks! VASSAL league helped me a lot and in my time active there I always placed well at tornaments, winning one 24 player one. But I had to quit that because of university, so now I just suck.

I’m terrible at building squads and fully understanding the synergies between ships and pilot abilities which is key to the game.

It’s too complex and although I could stand on the shoulders of giants and borrow lists, I like to work things out for myself.

I prefer the less complex and OT ships - just wish more of this game was based around recapturing ace moments from the films and less around deathmatches involving the more obscure craft and characters from the Star Wars universe.

Well with 2 regional wins, är few game Night/store champs and some local tournament wins I guess I am.

However I did not play alot of 1.0 since the end of 2017 and the game is remade so who knows.

Obviously No.

If I had to get good at xwing, I would have to practice so much that it would probably get rid of all the fun.

That's probably why I usually don't play following the meta game

It's really interesting how close this poll is. You usually expect 70-80%ish people to say they're above average at something.

I do OK in my local group but I don't even try to break into the competitive scene. This isn't my game for that. So I said "no". As of my vote, the poll is exactly 50/50. :)

I used to be...

Then I stopped playing for over a year..

Now I suck :P

I will say that I think I'm a good player, but I don't think I'll be putting in the time and effort to get really good. I mean, I think I'm good, but if I want to do well at major events I would have to really practice a lot more than I currently play. I'd also have to be able to go to these larger events....and that I just don't have the time/cash for. I do think that if I did have the time and cash to practice that I could go to these larger events and do well, though.

So, am I falling into the illusion of superiority if I haven't proven myself? Possibly. I think I've done well enough in a lot of my games that I feel alright.

I'm good at BUYING X-Wing.

I'm good at punching out abd sorting the cardboard tokens, sleeving up the cards.

When I get the chance to play I might win a game or two sometimes. If I'm lucky.

I used to think no. I like to fly all kinds of lists from all factions, almost never "meta" stuff. I joined a league and not only have I held my own with my assrotment of jank and fluff lists, b ut have finished in the top 2 several times so I would say I am good. Not great, but able to hang in with at least a chance to win each game regardless of match up.

If I can point to one thing its that since I have flown almost every ship out there, I am usually not surprised by anything I see across the table. I have an idea of what it can and cannot do and can plan for it.

I got very good at STAW, which has translated well enough into my XWMG matches. Balance-wise, it was like going from Unreal Tournament to Halo. So I’m great at the part involving actually pushing plastic around the table and going PEW PEW.

I stopped playing because I wasn’t willing to netlist, and too many lists were hard counters to some other list. Too many games were lost before ships were place on the table.

Am I good at playing the game: Absolutely

Am I good at paying enough attention to netlist properly: No

Do both parts of that contribute to being good at the game: Yes

NET RESULT: I’ll go with I’m a solid player who won’t dissapoint but I lack the investment to be great

I'm better than average 50% of the time.

If you are on a web forum dedicated to the game, you are probably good at X-Wing.

Are you good at X-Wing compared to the Top 16 players at World's is a different question entirely.

True enough, but it’s also a great place to look and learn from others so there’ll be more than a few rookies on here.

Or else there’s a lot of modest people on here too - which is a good thing!

I'm not good AND I dont why!

Its great!

Opening a can of worms here, but can someone who wins with a not x-wing list like triple wookies or Ghost Fenn actually be considered good based off of that alone?

if they win a lot, sure. If they can do that in 2nd ed. sure!

NO!

unhealthy fanatical devotion to A-Wings and Jan Ors is my fault.

I think "being good" and "winning" are correlated, but not as strongly as people believe.

(That said, I do well, and I rarely fly anything near the top of the meta. I also rarely stick with a given list through more than one tournament, and I'm usually flying on zero practice with a given list. But I'm good at judging maneuvers, I'm good at knowing what my opponent is likely to do, and I'm good at understanding the strengths and weaknesses, and wants and don't-wants, of a list without needing very much time to analyze it. So I do well.)

The softening of the game faces of my tournament opponents and the eagerness with which they point out my numerous missed triggers/opportunities etc seems to indicate I’m not viewed as much of a threat.....

Easiest ‘no’ ever! ?

I said yes, but only because I typically end up breaking even at tournaments.

We shall see how 2.0 goes.

Note you asked about good, not great. I would have to say “no” to being great. :)

I'm definitely good at buying/collecting. Actually winning games? Not so much.

I've won a few tournaments but I have a solid curse of going 3-3 at anything regional level and above. Friends tell me I'm good, but I don't feel like I am.
