Rules regarding premeasuring

By Pooleman, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello all,

Does anyone one know where in either of the new rule books premeasurimg is allowed/disallowed. For example, your opponent executed a maneuver and then wants to use the range finder to see if he is in my arc, if he is in my arc he chooses to barrel roll out of it. If he is not in my arc he will often choose another action. I was under the impression that this is not allowed but I can’t find it. I know in Legion the rule book specifically says you can use the range ruler at any time.

So the only place I can find any reference to premeasuring in X-wing at all is in the 1.0 FAQ where it explicitly lays out when a player is allowed to measure range... Since there is currently no such language in any of the rules for 2.0... I'm going to say its more than likely an oversight on the part of FFG, rather than an intended rules change.

You can’t quote the page can you? Just want to have it handy for when it comes up.

I hope this is an oversight from FFG because if you are allowed to premeasue it basically nullifies the whole failed actions concept.

It is not. This is an exception based ruleset and it never says you can premeasure, so you can't.

What about movement templates? I know that once the dial is revealed you have to move using that template, but I'm wondering about Emon's ability to drop a device using any of the 3 templates. Could you try each 3 template before picking the one you want to use? I know in Armada game they allow you to adjust the movement sticks next to the ships as long as the stick isn't place on the table. So I've seen people hold the sticks an inch off the table and decide if that is their movement. I thought that was cheesy, but they allow it. I was wondering if we could use that in X-Wing.

No. Once your chosen template hits the table in a given direction you are committed.

As far as I know you may only measure range, when there is an action or an attack allowing you to do that.

So you can't measure range for no reason inbetween. Unfortunately I can't find a text passage where the 2.0 rules state that exactly.

There has to be a reason for measuring range, such as a Target Lock. The 2.0 rules say on page 12:

When a ship performs a Lock action, it acquires a lock. A locking ship is a ship that is attempting to acquire a lock by performing the following steps:

1. Measure range from the locking ship to any number of objects .
2. Choose another object at range 0–3.
3. Assign a lock token to it with the number matching the ID marker of the locking ship.

If you are measuring range for a target lock, you have to take one lock then, though. Otherweise the action fails and you don't get an action at all.

Page 12: While acquiring a lock, it fails if no object is chosen.

Which is what they say in Amanda, so they hold the sticks an inch off the table top.

The rules tell you what you CAN do, not what you CAN'T. There might occasionally be something that's specifically called out as prohibited but that's for emphasis only. You can only measure when the rules say you can not whenever you feel like it. The rules don't say anywhere that I can't fire rubberbands at your ships to knock them out of the way before I move but I don't think anyone would accept that.
