It's only online.... No off line mode

By shotbyscott, in X-Wing Squad Builder

It seems pretty inefficient for it not to work offline. I can get the same functionality using the Web Browser-based builder and not have to download anything extra to my devices. So what exactly do I need the App for?

This is basically a must.

Seriously, an app needs an offline mode or else it’s worthless. If I wanted to use an internet browser to build lists, YASB is already doing it better.

Definitely needs an offline mode. I was in my flgs the other day and wanted to build lists and had no signal! Would also be useful at major tournaments where you may not have a signal.

Have any of you guys ever developed an app before? For something like the points system, this makes sense. Would you rather have to hit the download button in the app store every few weeks and eventually have your phone's storage full because of all the patches stacked on-top of each other? They never promised anything about the app. Be happy it even exists because at least if it is real it can be repaired. Let's remember that this is a table-top gaming company , this is probably the first time that they have developed an app. No one ever has a seamless release for something they are trying that is new. I'm not sure what incredible app you're looking for, but what we got is miles ahead of what I was expecting.

They already said that the updates would be seasonal with tourneys, so once every couple MONTHS. Also they said it would be a dowload and use WITHOUT connection, so that alone means if it isnt they falsely advertised it.

Nope. It's not even the first time they developed a companion app for a table top game (X-Com, L5R dice, Star Wars dice, etc). See this video of the dice app at X-Wing nationals:

Exactly. An App should be a all in one package that contains all the data. Not a fancy gussied up face for the Webpage to run in.

Yes. I have. And many other guys in the X-wing community, for free.

Check FFG's Road To Legend app for Descent. That is awesome!
And that is from 2 years ago. In 3D, with music, a working collection manager, campaign manager, offline play, everything!
The X-wing Squadron Builder app is, compared to that, a sorry, embarrassing, hacked together piece of software that few developers would want their names to appear on.

And no. Apps updates don't work like that. They autoupdate (at least in Android), and the new version replaces the previous one. You don't accumulate 100 versions in your phone.

In any case, this is almost pointless, since the X-wing Squadbuilder app is a glorified browser frame that connects to the website under the hood.
I find it amazing that, being that the case, the iOS version is still plagued with bugs that were solved for the Android and the web version a couple days ago.

It's hard to understand why would FFG want to damage their best selling game with such low production values put on their almost mandatory companion app, when they have done so much better before for other of their games with less market appeal.

Edit:

I didn't even know they had made one this good looking for Imperial Assault:

The app has improved but no off-line mode is a killer. I play in North Wales in the UK and we have sheep every where but not internet . I had to use a fan made app LaunchBayNext instead this weekend. If a fan made app can work off-line surely the official one should be able to do it too. I can forgive the save button being hard to find on my tablet and I'd like the collection function to show what I actually own. But OFF-LINE mode we need the most!!!

added a word to make it easier to read,

I still haven't spent a penny on any conversion kit or expansion and I won't unless they show that they're going to make an effort on the app. The app was to be the main source for updated information and data. To me the app is representative of how much effort they're willing to put into X-Wing 2.0. As it is, for me, it's not enough for me to justify spending money on X-Wing.
