Is 2.0 aimed at casuals, competitive players or both?

2.0 is firmly aimed at the competetive side.

They fixed all the stuff people in the Tourney scene didnt like, and basically ignored most of the casual players concerns. The game is way more complicated now, with many upgrades requiring more skill to use (due to bullseye arcs, etc.).

That said some broken stuff was fixed, but its no longer a game i can reccomend to friends who dont already own a collection

I disagree. Let me elaborate:

"Fixed stuff people in the Tourney scene didn't like" - I didn't like OP bullcrap in friendly game as well. Even if I don't také TLT, Tripple Scouts or Fat Han on a casual event, it doesn't mean other players feel the same. Custom Format option for the new app is extremely great for casual players and we will use it a lot in future.

"More complicated with upgrades requiring more sklil" - well, if the game is more about flying well with bold maneuvers, getting opponents in your croshair (eg. Bullseye) I think it make it more casual. In 1.0 the need for expert flying has been removed by card shenenigans. No upgrade in 2.0 is so powerful that you would really need to abuse it. That is what I consider more casual.

"Recommend to friends" - I would deffinatelly do. Compared to 1.0 where I would have say "There are simple rules that no longer applies because of crapload of upgrades, that change the basis of the game!"

On the other hand, I belive the game is strongly casual NOW. The OT ships are strong and meaningful but there will always be a power creep. And then, the game will change back to Highly Competetive Arms Race.

Cheers for any answers to this thread.

I’ve ordered a core set of 2.0 to play test, but definitely feel conflicted about going all in and converting what is a pretty modest 1.0 fleet (some of each faction).

Out of interest, if you were buying or selling second hand 1.0 models/stuff would you pay more to have them converted up front or would you rather have all the old stuff?

I probably need to drop into a local gaming night to see what the score is.

If you don't quite have enough to be converted with a conversion kit, it might be best to just sell what you have. It can be used by someone else with a similar collection to bulk up what they have to make the conversion kit worth it.

Or...you can buy the conversion kit and sell off the spare bits, but that takes time for individual sales.

Good luck! I hope you stick with it as I am enjoying 2nd Ed like it's back at Wave 1 or 2.

Which was fine as we had a launch party and used quick builds. It was a blast and the alt arts were sweet.

I would say, depending on how big your handful was...

1. Sell the ships from the factions you won’t play in 2.0. Use that to help fund a couple missing 1.0 ships for faction of choice plus the conversion box.

2. Offload it all and start fresh, but then try to stick to formats that allow “only rereleased content” because the conversion kits have LOADS of good stuff that you won’t have right away (until they come back in an expansion in the future).

3. Look for someone doing the same with a bigger collection and pick up the faction you care about.

Honestly, I’ve seen a ton of big lots locally for sale as folks are downsizing or quitting. Now is a great time to nab a pretty strong collection of one faction if you don’t have it cheap. Factoring in the cost of conversion, it’s still cheaper after around 12 ships than buying them as rereleases

What's uncertain about epic? It seems lately people are freaking out about it as if it's going to go away. FFG stated they were going to come out with 2nd Ed (starting with 3 factions) and get to Epic later when they can give it real attention. There are still ships out for 2 factions that haven't been released yet. We JUST released 2nd Ed for the first 3 factions. They will do Epic most likely next year.

Where are you getting this "uncertain future" thing for epic?

Perhaps I should have said "uncertain timeline" since that's my chief concern with epic (although I admit I'm not actually a huge epic fan. I enjoy it, but I can wait). Next year seems overly optimistic with so much to relaunch as well as two new factions with a huge pool of ships. And if epic is your preferred form of play, there isn't much point in converting until it's released.

I love epic, but due to time constraints I wouldn’t call it my preferred form.

I am converting to 2.0 because I really like everything they’ve done (well, aside from that snafu yesterday with the builder :) ).

I have all the epic ships... I hope that one day I can fly them again. I’ve held onto my 1.0 stuff just in case I have to do it that way.

Honestly, I would be surprised if we see any epic from FFG within the next two years. The first 12-18 months are going to be insane trying to rerelease the old ships in new packaging, while bulking up the sequel trilogy factions, and also dropping all new prequel factions.

Maybe I’ll just resolve to play more Legion for the days I could have played epic but didn’t with time...

I'm not so sure on that. Even if you take epic as it is now and keep using it, I think it's better. The small ships are less OP than they were, which helps out the Epic ships more. All the crazy ordnance is gone, like Harpoon Missiles. Same for Twin Laser Turret. The overall power of the game is down a bit, which is good. Just allow Jam to be like regular Jam (but keep the range for epic). I might keep old Reinforce the same, too.

On a related note, if I have the old Protectorate Fighter, for example, and I buy the conversion kit, does the new Fang Fighter 2.0 expansion contain stuff I didnt get in the conversion kit? IE do I need to rebuy after all ?

It does have a copy of Afterburners that didn’t get in the Conversion kits for some reason, but you can also get that card in the core set. Everything else, including the brand new pilot Joy, should be in the Scum and Villainy Conversion Kit.

Cheers for the advice.

My collection was originally bought for a few casual games with friends and then it got out of hand, haha, as these things do.

Not including the 2.0 core set, I’ve got the following that has been gathering dust:

Rebels:

1 x B Wing

1 x Y Wing

3 x X Wing

2 x A Wing

1 x Falcon

Imperials:

6 x Tie Fighters

3 x Tie Interceptors

1 x Tie Bomber

1 x Tie Advanced

Scum:

1 x Firespray

1 x Y Wing

2 x Z95 Headhunters

1 x M3a Interceptor

1 x Kihraxz

1 x HWK

When I’ve looked at the contents of the conversion kits, I’m not sure it is value for money for me as I don’t intend to play regular competitive X Wing.

My hope is that 2.0 might breathe new life into some of those ships while simultaneously making the game more accessible to friends who just want the odd game.

I’d say your hope has been granted, however... you will need the cardboard / dials for those ships for them to have that new life.

How you want to go about it is entirely up to you, and I get that $50 USD is a steep price to pay for a handful of ships.

I know if I was **brand new**, i would do 2.0 only format and just buy new. And if I had been more casual a buyer, I’d have picked one faction to go “all in” on and swap my other stuff for 1.0 models of the chosen faction, then the kit would make sense. I have friends who did that.

Needless to say, it has been a very expensive week for me when I had “one of everything” minimum for all three factions :) I offloaded my resistance stuff since they’re their own wave 2 faction now, and am telling myself “no prequels!” so I can afford to play. Realistically, I’ll settle on one “main player”, maybe two, and the others are mostly there to let me play the stuff I own already.

For casual play only, there are plenty of pics online of new dials and cardboard for bases. Print them out and glue them to 1.0 dials and cardboard and you're golden. You'll have all the functionality with no real extra cost, other than a couple sheets of paper and a Uhu stick (glue stick for paper). You may want some 2.0 models, simply because they're cool. I want a 2.0 Fang because SPINNY WINGS! But I intend to purchase a few more 1.0 models to fill out my conversion kits' capacities (not for every ship, but ones worth getting now).
