Eld's Painted Descent 2e Figures - Updated!

By Eldrast, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello fellow Descent fans. I have been browsing the forums and was inspired to share some of my painting with the community. I have been working on the game for several months now (I paint as a pure hobbyist so my kids can have some fun with the minis, so I only get an hour here and there to paint, so updates going forward will be a little sporadic) and have made some progress. I don't pretend to be a super-skilled painter, but I have put some time into the hobby, and am particularly proud of certain effects I stumbled across. I will trickle pics to this forum as I can. My methodology for painting is that I only work up a base for the Master monsters, Lieutenants, and heroes. I also do my best to add extra details or try a different color scheme between master and minion monsters. Comments and criticism are always welcome, as are questions if you happen to see something you like and want to recreate in your painting.

I figured out how to get images in.

One of the first monsters I attempted were the Ettins.

I'd love to hear what you think. The skin on the master was an attempt at vitiligo (a skin condition where the skin loses pigment) + some relatively detailed (for me) work on the loin cloth.

I just realized how few pictures I have uploaded in a shareable format. I will remedy that tonight so I can get some heroes and other stuff up here...I also want to pace my shares, as I only have about 50 total models painted from the game (and about that many waiting on my shelf, and who knows how many left to buy), but I'm excited about starting this thread, so I'll do 1 more today - the cave spiders:

I hope you like them.

So I lied about the whole 1 more image thing...here I present the Trolls from the Visions of Dawn expansion:

I attempted tribal tattoos on the Master troll on his chest and back. I am reasonably pleased with the result, even if it isn't as stark a contrast on blue skin as it might be on beige. I hope you like them.

Eld

Here are the Elementals -- these were literally the first models from the game I painted and I didn't do any base for the Master. I'll figure it out eventually.

I hope you enjoy them.

And here are the Zombies. I try to reserve purple (unless card art dictates otherwise) for Master monsters, since that was historically a color of royalty.

As always, comments are welcome!

And finally for tonight, the Shadow Dragons. I will post some Lieutenants and Heroes later on.

Really nice job you did there! I like your outreaching ideas you put in them. Love you master Shadow Dragon, this gave me an idea I'll will do on other models I still have to paint. Altho I found the dragon rock too high, I like the idea of the master standing out in this kind of way. I think I'll will be doing the same with some models I REALLY like, for display purpose, like the Troll, Bane Spider, Cryptdragon and some other small monsters (as I did with my Ice Wyrm). Will keep you updated ;) , I got a great idea for the crypt dragon now (because of you! THX).

Keep up the good work!

Thanks! The dragon is pretty high - but in my defense, on the art he's on top of a mountain! I look forward to seeing your next update.

Here I present the Shades from the Shards of the Everdark hero and monster collection. This whole expansion is a welcome change in model quality, with solid sculpts. I recommend it highly. I had a lot of fun trying to get a cold white on the master, and I think I succeeded eventually.

Here are the Ynfaernal Hulks from the Shadow of Nerekhall expansion. These were an enormous pain in the @s$ to paint, especially because I made the truly questionable decision to make the master model my first attempt to use oil paints as a primary medium. Full disclosure -- I made it through base coats and initial blending on the rocks before throwing in the towel, varnishing, and using standard acrylics to finish up the highlights. BUT I do like how vibrant the oils ended up making the yellows.

I will finish up today's posting with a lieutenant - Splig. This was my first attempt at actual NMM, and I managed to track down several bags of crops that he stole from the farmer in The Fat Goblin quest. This miniature was TINY - it is easy to lose track of how small some of these things are because of zoom functions, but man, getting details on this was TOUGH.

I'm almost out of painted monsters already! I guess I need to actually get some of the masters painted so I can have finished groups! In any case, here I present the Fire Imps from Lair of the Wyrm. I only used inks on these models as an experiment (except for picking out eyes and teeth). Let me know how you think they turned out.

And here is my second lieutenant, Gargan Mirklace, who was a lot of fun to paint...so I rushed and did him before my skill had caught up to my ambitions! I would do some things differently now.

And I guess we'll also kick of our heroes with everyone's favorite drunken dwarf...Grisban the Thirsty!

Here, I present Valyndra, the Wyrm Queen.

I put some effort into this one and painted each scale individually + worked up the base to achieve what i hope is a nice effect.

Eld

Here are my renditions of the Ogres, from the Visions of Dawn Hero and Monster collection. These were pretty ok sculpts. Instead of tattoos like the trolls, I imagined that ogres might do ritualistic scarring.

Today, I present Jain Fairwood. I am finishing up the master Barghest tonight, so will post them soon. I need to get a photobox...the highlights all get washed out in these, unfortunately :(

You do great work and put a lot of effort into your models. It's a real shame you seem to skip the mold line removal and gap filling process. It ruins what otherwise is excellent work.

Thank you, Alcovitch. I actually do a fair amount of gap filling in the models, though I experiment with different methods - green stuff v. CA glue, for instance (the CA glue was almost a disaster). I admit that I am terrible at removing the mold lines. I try to get the most obvious ones, but I don't spend the time I should on it. It's something I need to work a lot more on. In any case, I hope you take a look in the future, as I will try to improve that aspect of the hobby!

Here are my Barghests. I spent quite a lot of time painting individual brushstrokes to simulate hair (and to get me ready for my KD:M White Lion).

Today I will share my Goblin Archers. I'm not 100% satisfied with how the master turned out, but there's paint on the model, I guess. The letters on the back of the quiver seemed like a good idea at the time, but somehow I flubbed the process...oh well. I hope you enjoy. The helmet showing some steel still is intentional, as I was going for a "the goblin used the blood of his enemies to stain his helmet red" look.

Today I would like to share my Dark Minotaurs, from the Shards of the Everdark Hero and Monster pack. I liked these sculpts, and played with OSL a bit.
