Talisman: The Hungry Forest

By Reedstilt, in Talisman Home Brews

Do not trespass in the domain of the dryads. They have worked their magic and awoken the trees and the brush. No longer will they fear the woodsman's axe or the farmer's scythe. The woods groan, the grass whispers, and the forest itself hungers.

This expansion adds a variety of Plant-themed Adventure cards, characters, and a few other odds-and-ends. A version of the Terrain card above originally appeared in my Atlantis expansion, but I've made a slight change to it. Elementals now also gain a bonus to their attack rolls to account for Dryads, Ents, and other wood-based Elementals present in this deck. Plant Enemies is something I first encountered in Earl Wynn's various deck but they originated in Carstan Both's Wilderness expansion (found on TalismanIsland's 1st & 2nd Edition expansion page). To honor those roots, I've included a few direct successors to Both's cards in this set. They're not necessarily mechanically identical, but I've attempted to keep the theme of the card while updating it for my own purposes. Here are a few examples:

To honor those roots...

I see what you did there...

If I may:

Thanks for the suggestions Bludgeon. Unfortunately, the current roster of cards is more or less set at the moment, minus one slot that opened up when a Stranger got upgraded to an Ending. That slot will most likely be filled with a new Stranger, or maybe a Follower or Event. I've already cut out several Enemies to keep their numbers to a manageable level (38 out of the 90 new Adventure cards).

I do want to add your Trap cards (and a few of my own) at some point, but those will probably wait until I get to the corner regions. Or maybe I'll just do a little "Trap" themed batch of cards since I still haven't decided what to do with the Trapper. I know I don't want to leave him as an "Enemy - Monster" but I'm not sure if he should become an "Enemy - Outlaw" or something else yet. Hmm... maybe it'd would pair well with another concept I've been kicking around.

Speaking of Enemies, though, here are some more from this set:

I'm very nearly done with set. There's only about half a dozen cards whose effects are still giving my trouble pinning down. In the meantime, I thought I'd show off one of the other big features of this set: Flowers. These are magical plants that you can gain by interacting with several other cards included in the Hungry Forest, if you're playing as the Floral Priest, or if your playing with the Crown of Flowers Ending. They are trinkets that function much like Spells, producing a one-time effect when they are discarded. Being Objects, they bypass a character's normal Spell limit, but are more vulnerable to other effects so there's a trade off there. Here are a few examples of the Flowers and the Adventure cards that interact with them.

What do you want with the bees? Here are my hornets. Maybe you can take this for your expansion?

I`` m still working on my expansion with no theme. There I also use new enemys like plants or insects. Here are some ideas.

Thanks for the offer, Nr. 5, but unfortunately it seems like your links aren't working. I'm guessing they're dropbox links based on how they're appearing to me. I don't think dropbox image links and the forum get along very well. I'm looking forward to seeing what you've come up with once the links are working.

I probably won't be including anyone else's cards in this set, unless it's something I particularly like thematically but need to make changes to its effects. Once I'm done with my themed sets, I plan on putting together a mixed bag of other people's cards that I've liked and want to include in my game. I'm not planning on sending that set off to TalismanIsland though since it'll be entirely borrowed ideas. I could share it here if people are interested in which of their ideas I lovingly stole.

As for the bees, this set has 3 bee-themed cards in it .The bee hive was the first I made. The other two cards are a Swarm of Bees that chase you while you're carrying a Flower (a cursed Follower that gives you a Flower) and the Apiarist Ring which allows you to collect magical Flowers from the bodies of all these monstrous Plants. So they're all related to finding Flowers, so that's more in line with bees than hornets.

I sent The Hungry Forest off to TalismanIsland, so hopefully it'll be up there soon. As usual, if you want any individual cards, let me know.

The theme here is fantastic. I love the flower mechanic, very well thought out!
