Getting the basics for a school games club

By Rat of Vengence, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hi all, I am looking at getting Destiny to add another game to the collection in the games club I run at my school. We will NOT be buying booster sets, and it will be a 'bought and stop' sort of thing.

I'm thinking of getting 2 copies of the two player box, and perhaps a Rey starter and a Kylo starter. Local shop has a sale with the 2 player at $25 and the others at $12.

What do you suggest?

Two 2-player starter is definitely the most complete play experience without going boosters. The single starters aren’t quite as good and also better to play with if you have two of each. I’d also suggest the Luke/Boba starters over the Kylo/Rey just so you have more diversity in colors and characters.

Agreed with gokubb. The Two Player Game is a great starting product, and two copies of it would be very good. I'd also recommend the Luke/Boba starters instead of Kylo/Rey, just for more diversity.

I'll also mention that you can probably find the Two Player Game cheaper than $25. Apparently, some of the big chains (Target, Amazon) bought too many copies and were giving them away REALLY cheap the last couple of months. I got two of them from Amazon for only $7 each a couple of weeks ago. I think they might finally be running low on stock and raising the price to more realistic levels, but I just checked, and it's still only $16.70 on Amazon. Even if you don't have Prime and have to pay for shipping, that's cheaper than the $25 at your local store.

I think Best Buy may have it for $5 right now. But yeah starting with the two player sets is a great starting point. Picking up the Boba or Luke starter sets is good as well since they are part of the whote box cycle and more balanced towards what FFG plans in the future of the game.

Thanks for the replies :)

Sounds fair, but the Luke/Boba are $22/$20 while the other two are $12 each, so I could get two of each with the funds I've got.

Not in Australia :P They retail at $50 here, so real happy to be able to get them at half price.

I hear you, but I've no interest in going further, just want to have a stand alone game ready to roll for the kids. I've never been into the CCG's , but I've had a few games of Destiny with mates and it's good fun, so I figure the kids will enjoy it too :)

So two two player starters is good, allowing 'elite' characters, right? Should I do the same with the Rey/Kylo starters?

Thanks again :D

Just found this GIF, I didn't think Fury Road could be better. I was wrong!

Ok, didn't realize you were Aussie. Yeah, prices are going to be different down there.

Don't know about the Rey and Kylo starters, but the Luke and Boba starters both come with two dice for the main character, so you really only need one copy of each. The only down side is that the Luke starter comes with Han and only one die, so you couldn't play him epic. But you could pair epic Luke with epic Rey or Poe from the Two Player Game (assuming you get two of that).

Great to hear you are trying to add Star Wars Destiny to your gaming club! I run a bit of MTG and added SWD last year to the mix at my own school. I'm currently doing the following:

1. 1 2-Player Kit with decks sleeved and ready to play for students - This is my 'learning to play' setup, since the decks are smaller and fairly balanced out of box.

2. 2 other more 'advanced' decks sleeved and ready to play - I currently have 2 decks (1 Hero and 1 Villain) that I've put together from excess cards from myself and some from the local playgroup I'm in locally. These aren't Tier 1 tournament decks, but offer a 4-dice character start and 10-dice cards in the deck with some different options/abilities in there to help see the different things the game can do. I THINK they are fairly balanced (playtested a few times) and I hope to add 2 more decks when I can get the chance. I have 1 ready to go, but wanted to wait to add it in later in the year for those who have been playing a bit and they can then see a new bit of variety for the game. My goal was 4 decks total, but the last deck hit a hurdle...I need 2 more Gungan Warriors (I have a budget Gungan deck waiting on those 2 cards to finish it). But, this gives the students in the classroom some decks to test drive in my room and see how the game goes without having to buy in to a new game just yet.

3. Commons / Uncommons "Community Chest" - I have excess commons/uncommons in my room for students to have for deckbuilding, should they decide to get into the game. They are divided by set and are there for the taking. I figure they are better served for those seeking to get in the game - especially since I already have my 2x set I need.

I do the same kind of setup for MTG (up to 9 sleeved and playable decks and approx. 3000 cards in the MTG Community Chest). Going on Year 3 for MTG and Year 2 for SWD. I was able to hold 1-2 independent MTG events a year with kids outside of school hours (usually draft/sealed) and the same for SWD last year (I think 2 events). The traction isn't there as much as I would like, but doing what I can to help the community grow. :) I've also worked with some members of our local community on some Learn to Play events, but not a lot of traction there sadly. Currently working on getting something going at our feeder MS...but nothing there yet. Good luck!
