First of, thanks everyone for the replies. Maybe a final question (maybe not), what would offer the most for a good part of the gameplay. YYGGG as a pool or YYYY ? I feel that the higher chances on Y outweigh extra G. Or is it just to easy to get skill ranks up that I shouldn't bother to much with it?

I think in terms of pure math, rolling more dice gives you better odds of success with advantages, while having more upgraded dice just increases the chances of rolling a Triumph, but not by a huge amount.

It generally is easier to boost up your skill ranks since you don't need a specific talent or need to front-load your character to have a 4 in whichever characteristic you want to focus on. Of course, a higher characteristic means you've got a better base pool for a broader array of skills (especially for Intellect and Cunning), so I guess it depends on how much you want to focus on one specific skill.

My own suggestion would be to start with a 3 in Intellect, and then raise it to 4 with Dedication. That 40XP you would have otherwise spent at character creation can then be spent on boosting up skills, buying talents, and perhaps raising another one of your 2's to a 3.

If YYGGG means having higher characteristic? then always choose higher characteristic. The exception? one-shots and short (really short) campaigns.

Or if you have talents that specifically care about the Skill rank. Conversely, there are talents that also depend directly on the Characteristic rank, so this might further push you in that direction.
