Conversion packs

By devin.pike.1989, in Star Wars: Legion

I think it would be pretty awesome if FFG started selling some basic conversion packs. A set of alien heads for rebel troopers, Jedha/Solo style stormtroopers backpacks with shelter rolls, unhelmeted heads for both rebels and stormtroopers, alternate push fit arms to go on existing sets...

I realize that much of this is already produced by third parties or can be 3d printed, but personally if FFG started producing things like this I would buy it just to support the game. There were people 3d printing vaporators and crates before the game even came out but FFG still produced their own set.

I think if they were going to do that, they'd just be selling the units with spare parts already included and not clipping the pieces off the sprues for us. They seem dedicated to keeping up the uniformity of a product.

Maybe for heads and arms but backpacks, pouches and pouches could be separate.

Pouches and pouches... You can never have enough. ?

That would be a welcome addition, as I also want variety for my troops. Conversions are easier with Fleet Troopers and Commandoes than Core Set Rebels since most heads are now "push to fit". I like to think that this decision was made to make head swaps easier to do.

We do get 7 dynamic poses in each expansion. I am just happy that they didn't go the Imperial Assault route and just give us 7 of the same miniature and make them one piece so you have tight spaces to paint.

Most of the backpacks are molded as one piece onto the torso, or is designed in such a way as to only fit a specific torso.

If you want pouches or alternate backpacks, 28mm+ WW2 plastics are a great source. Many of the costume pieces from the OT are WW2 surplus equipment or ammunition pouches. Heck, most of the weapons were WW2 surplus with added bits.

Some fun details on this here: https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2015/12/16/the-force-awakens-veterans-major-players-in-star-wars-universe/

------

"It's the gritty, real-world feel to the original trilogy that set it apart from anything that ever came before it," says Horton. "This was an intentional design decision by Lucas, who wanted the 'Star Wars' universe to feel used and lived in; different, but familiar. So by using real things — and modifying them — he could get that."

For example, just look a little closer at Han Solo's trusty blaster. It's actually a German-made Mauser C96 semi-automatic pistol with just a few cosmetic changes.
Gun collectors might also recognize the Stormtroopers' preferred blaster, really a British-made Sterling L2A3 sub-machine gun. Watch closely in the original "Star Wars" and you'll see actual casings flying from the guns as actors used blank-firing models during combat scenes. Even the blaster scopes were pilfered from surplus World War II-era U.S. M-38 Wolfhound armored cars, says Horton.
A B-29 Superfortress pilot would feel right at home inside the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. With a few special modifications of his own, Lucas transformed the flight deck of one of the most advanced World War II bombers into our front-row seat to hyperspace.
While the main structure of Solo's ship was made from scratch, much of its rich detail was added using existing military model pieces, says Horton. "On the hull of the Falcon, you will find pieces of Panther tanks, Tiger tanks, Messerschmitt 109 fighters, Kubelwagons, and many more,"

Extra pouches and weapons and arms are the industry norm for plastic that requires assembly. The fact that they aren't doing it that way means they probably won't sell those things later on. Upgrade cards seem to be their version of conversion bits.

I am considering the 3rd party alien heads, combined with scout troopers or something, to make a squad of imperial-hired bounty hunters though.

I don't really agree. I think is frequently expected, but I'd hardly call it the "industry norm." Games Workshop has been offering more and more models in plastic that only have a single pose innately, I've seen quite a few other sprue kits with only enough parts to build X models, without any customization, mostly in the world of historical minis.

Besides, these models are a different kind of plastic than normally used in those sort of "plastic" kits, as evidenced by "plastic glue" not working, so if anything Legion minis are more akin to resin models.

Admittedly I stopped knowing the details of GW's minis when they slowly stopped releasing anything new that I wanted I to own.

But Fireforge and Perry and the Frostgrave plastics and such still have lots of little spare parts to tinker with.

Again, different kind of plastic, and different packaging. Both in being packaged on the sprue, and in significantly larger model counts.

Yeah and due to the above, I think if spare parts were ever going to be a thing, we'd see them already. I don't follow FFG's Rune miniature games, did they ever release conversion packs or serious spare parts for that?

According to the products page, no.

I'd settle for a couple of "alternate" packs of sergeants... Sergeants with different posses or a helmet off... And then maybe have a different heavy/special weapon trooper in as a two pack. Just a thought.

I have had success swapping the arms around my rebels so I don't have a million of the exact same squad. Gatling gun goes on Ion Girl, ion gun goes on Oldman McBeardy, his rifle goes on Guy O'Gatling.

Good to know... Thanks. Going to try the same.

Here's a pic. I was inspired by the stat card, which shows the Z-6 being used by, apparently, Anna Hendricks.

There's a lot of knife, file, and putty work to do when this dries but here. I made another using the woman who is firing a rifle. Cause she has that waspy waist we see on the Z-6 card illustration.
