Why would I want to buy snow troopers?

How useful/necessary is the extra trooper? Do you take them only when taking grenades? Or do you fit the snowies full and skimp on tje stormtroopers? What is the consensus on when to take the extra trooper vs leaving him at home and when to take the in-unit commamder upgrade?

As someone who only uses snowtroopers, I find an extra squad member quite helpful. Can't always afford one though and grenades are a better choice if I have to pick. Usually I take two squads of 5 and three squads of 6, for a total of five squads. While I actually like the ion gun, I find I usually take 0-1 of them in my army because I have to shave those points off to get my grenades, extra basic troopers, etc. Someday maybe I'll paint a 6th squad of snowtroopers.

In the late-game desperate brawl that happens near objectives, I think my grenades really matter. Plus grenades are rather "characterful" so I hate to do without them. Stormtroopers have grenades: or at least did in the ever-shifting sands of canon backstory.

Stormtroopers at 11 points each seemed like the best bet if you can afford esteemed leader and have long-range capacity so useful in both stages as a meat shield and as support shooting. The downside is, you can only save one wound at a time with the esteemed leader. The benefit is you can spread out those ones on different units. Royal guard while having Guardian 2, seem more expensive, you do get eight wounds effectively but you paid 12 1/2 points for each of those wounds. And their effective range is much shorter as well as being better in melee. Royal Guard but they're more expensive price point see you in that they would be better to use them effectively on the offensive

So, now that Royal Guards are out, a question about the Snowtroopers - Impact Grenades or Fragmentation Grenades?
Has anyone done the math?

It seems to me frag grenades would be much better against non-Armor targets than Impact, bo how do they fare against vehicles with Armor?

They might but, the flamethrower is already so good against infantry squads. You risk turning them into a one trick pony.

What math do you need? Sure the blast on the flamethrower is great but it won't take out a unit. Average dice you'll wound four out of six. Red dice hit much stronger than black or white dice. Surge for crit makes them good vs armor, impact on grenades is better for armor. 7/8 red dice are better for everything else. If you jave problems with armor take the impact grenades. For everything else, frag are better

Exactly my point. And what they asked about.
