Trying to get into the game

By PC'sFrank, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

I recently acquired some ships for Armada, and some cards from friends who no longer use them. I attempted to assemble a flexible fleet from what I have. I'd like to know how well you guys think this will hold up. Also, should Tua and the defensive upgrade slot be on the gladiator instead of the raider?

Name: Cymoon 1 Fleet v3 Faction: Imperial Commander: Grand Admiral Thrawn
Assault: Opening Salvo Defense: Fire Lanes Navigation: Superior Positions
ISD Cymoon 1 Refit (112) • Grand Admiral Thrawn (32) • Strategic Adviser (4) • Intensify Firepower! (6) • Gunnery Team (7) • Hardend Bulkheads (5) • XX-9 Turbolasers (5) = 171 Points
Gladiator I (56) • Captain Brunson (5) • Ordnance Experts (4) • Nav Team (4) • Expanded Launchers (13) • Demolisher (10) = 92 Points
Raider I (44) • Minister Tua (2) • Assault Proton Torpedoes (5) • Impetuous (4) • Early Warning System (7) = 62 Points
Squadrons: • Maarek Stele (21) • TIE Defender Squadron (16) • 4 x TIE Fighter Squadron (32) = 69 Points
Total Points: 394

I am no fan of this "overkill" Gladiators with Demolisher and Expanded Launchers (EL). It is just to expensive.

I would maybe think about removing the EL and just add external Racks. Most time you have only one shot with him. And the EL are just to expensive for this one shot.

Maybe even remove the XX-9. The extra faceup card is nice, but will happen really late. And most of the time not work against large ships when they have a contain token (ups ;)).

3rd change i suggest would be the Early Warning System on the raider. The arcs from the raider are really easy to dodge. Especially when you let the enemy squadrons free. So my suggestion would be to change the Titel to the Instigator (to take out all the squadrons) or to remove the Early Warning System.

No matter off the 3rd change, the two changes (EL -> External Racks and remove of XX-9) would give you 15 free points. Maybe remove the Hardend Blukheads as well and add a Gozanti as 4th ship. This one can do squadron commands. It would free up your other ships from this job. And it count as additional ship (activation). And maybe add a Comms Net on the Gozanti. But this is optional. Thrawn give already a lot free room for commands.

Thank you for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I have no Gozantis or turbolaser upgrades other than the XX-9. The other suggestions you made seem sound; I will look into them.

Wait... Isn't XX-9 a critical effect? Which means contains cannot block it since it's not the standard critical effect (except if they have DCO)?

Yes, it is. My fault. Contain cannot block it.
But i still do not like this card so much ;). And have never used it so far (as far as i remeber).

I am testing a fleet using it on a Mon Karren Star Cruiser right now and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised.

It does require the proper platform to make the damage stick (so, XI7, which means double Turbolaser slots... Which means only the Cymoon or Liberty), but it hits more often than I expected.

@PC'sFrank

I think XX-9 is fine, but you need XI7 there to make sure it's useful. Otherwise, Tokra's advice is sound.

If you're playing casual games, I'd see if your opponent will let you borrow or proxy cards. Even in tournaments (at least around here), people are willing to lend cards and ships. It's harder to proxy ships in casual games because of the firing arcs, but for there's no reason to gimp your fleet because you don't have XI7 or you don't have a sixth Intel Officer.

I know if I had a friend who was missing a couple of cards, I'd be more than willing to let him/her proxy things. Could even proxy the damage deck, the range ruler, the command tokens. I'd even proxy the whole table!
