4Sphere Hobbit Deckbuilding

By Zura, in Strategy and deck-building

It really turns out i'm not the greatest deckbuilder:

I've decided to try and build another strong deck that is not Elrond or Dwarves. I heard a lot of good stuff about Hobbits, so i decided to give the archetype a shot. I took a look at a lot of existing hobbit decks and took some inspiration from them but i had decided that i need test of will in this deck no matter what so i also splashed 4th sphere a little bit. Unfortunately this deck just doesn't hold its own against any challanging scenario, hobbits die way too fast to any sort of direct damage, if any enemy has low engagement it also gets super hard and it's hard to muster a lot of initial willpower if you want to play safe. How would you improve the deck to be a little more flexible? I have three first cycles, both hobbit boxes and three saga boxes. (also if anyone can reccomend some power decks in this cardpool that do not involve elrond, dwarves and outlands i am also open to them)

Here is what I offer you:

Hobbit Build for Zura

Main Deck

Hero (3)
Merry (The Black Riders)
Pippin (The Black Riders)
Sam Gamgee (The Black Riders)

Ally (20)
1x Beorn (Core Set)
2x Bill the Pony (The Black Riders)
1x Boromir (The Road Darkens)
1x Dori (Over Hill and Under Hill)
1x Erebor Hammersmith (Core Set)
1x Erestor (The Long Dark)
1x Faramir (Core Set)
3x Gandalf (Core Set)
1x Gildor Inglorion (The Hills of Emyn Muil)
1x Gimli (The Treason of Saruman)
1x Gléowine (Core Set)
1x Henamarth Riversong (Core Set)
1x Landroval (A Journey to Rhosgobel)
1x Legolas (The Treason of Saruman)
1x Quickbeam (The Treason of Saruman)
2x Warden of Healing (The Long Dark)

Attachment (15)
1x Dagger of Westernesse (The Black Riders)
2x Elf-stone (The Black Riders)
3x Fast Hitch (The Dead Marshes)
3x Hobbit Cloak (The Black Riders)
3x Resourceful (The Watcher in the Water)
3x Steward of Gondor (Core Set)

Event (15)
3x A Very Good Tale (Over Hill and Under Hill)
3x Daeron's Runes (Foundations of Stone)
3x Feint (Core Set)
3x Sneak Attack (Core Set)
3x Timely Aid (The Redhorn Gate)

3 Heroes, 50 Cards
Cards up to The Treason of Saruman

Just like you I put a large number of allies, and particularly expensive ones in order to balance the weakness of the heroes. But I take advantage of the secrecy to be able to get them in play: timely aid and resourceful are really the enablers that you need. Further in the game you may come back in secrecy thanks to Gandalf, but even if you don't the gain of having them in turn one worth not being able to pay the ones you draw after.

A very good tale ensure you to take even more advantage of that: you exhaust two over costed ally and gain two other big allies. Having 20 allies is a strict minimum of allies (you already will miss on very good tale sometime). It force you to choose some allies over event or attachment that may have been a little bit more powerful (like dagger of westernesse). I'm not a big fan of elf-stone and I manage to be able to pay my cards with both steward and resourceful but I don't have enough data to say it is garbage so I let them. Watch if they are really useful or not.

To my own I prefer to play secrecy over hobbit. The two theme have a lot in common, but I enjoy playing spirit with hobbit, like Glorfindel. Even like that this kind of deck is still weaker than dwarf, vilya or outlands. Those three are may be still the top 3 solo deck. I assume you want deck viable in solo. You may find some pleasure playing Rohan, Caldara, or some decks including Beravor, Hama or Boromir without errata...

Thanks a lot, yeah i meant a solo deck. I tried it out and worked out better than original incarnation did, (it really needs to draw timely aid first turn though, great card)! I just feel like it's missing one or two more big allies (like beorn type big) but i don't have any so that will have to do. I like the elfstone a lot and it worked a few times (i've been playing nightmare passage through mirkwood so there were locations to put it on). Only change i've made was to switch one hobbit cloak for 3rd bill the pony. It just feels too good to have the free ally that makes your heroes a bit more durable in your starting hand. Overall, thanks a lot, i now have 3rd semi-serious deck to take on some harder quests.
