More pregens out there besides the 7?

By bsmith23, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Roleplaying Game

Just wondering if ayone out there has made Beginner Box style characters, just for fun. Or, if I were to make my own, how much is invested in creation.

Using Lion Bushi as example, I see 46 xp in skills and rings, an Advantage, an Ability, and a Turmoil. Think we can go by this for creating others?

Sorry for rambling.

A lot of people have said that it is basically the same rules as the beta rules with a few changes. I'm not sure what the differences are, but if you go from the beta rules, you won't be far off.

I'd say it's got some major differences - some due to simplification for a BG, and some appear to be answering beta-long complaints.

  • Simplified Crits. (similar to how crits were handled in the EotE, AoR, F&D, and Ep7 BG's)
    • No rolls
    • 4 steps
  • Duels reduced to one-roll-each.
  • Ring descriptions subtly different
    • Void Points start at 1, not half void.
      • No flipping ads/disads because no rules for disads nor passions
  • Endurance and Composure formulae changed
  • Unmask
    • provides bonus to following roll (TN-1)
    • almost all cause either HR honor loss or GR Glory loss
    • still no forced unmask
  • End of Scene Recoveries
    • Strife Reduce to half composure
    • Fatigue reduce to half endurance
    • Water has no benefit
    • first aid as worded appears to be same scene only, thus before reductions at end of scene.
  • No wheel of discord
  • Slightly reduced XP rate
    • 4 XP per session, not 2 per hour
      • Session defined as 2 or 3 major encounters and a handful of minor encounters
    • 2-4 per major checkpoint, not 3-5.
  • opportunity spends
    • 2 narrative and 2 non-narrative per ring
    • 7 any ring (3 of them in adventure text, others on back cover of rulebook)
    • No raise initiative with fire opportunity spends.
  • No big grid approaches table
    • replaced by one-liners per skill
  • No key scene mechanic
  • No Passions, adversities, anxieties
  • No afflicted (no surprise, for the beginner box)
  • No Base Severity for weapons
  • Characters have more skill levels (my players tell me it's two more.)
  • Honor, glory and Status
    • No clan specific modifiers to honor gains.
    • Failures implied to cost honor and/or glory by inclusion of "1 Opp: If the check was a failure, the PC demonstrates their determination and skill even in the face of adversity, suffering no embarrassment or shame for failing."
    • No specific honor nor glory awards, but unmasking can cost either or both.
    • All PCs at status 35

As an aside, it also gives us, for the first time, kanji for the family names. (Included are the translations google gave me for them...)

  • Hida 避打 (hitting)
  • Akodo 亞古努 (A Dedication)
  • Dōji 堂字 (shōgun)
  • Togashi 竜蛾仕 (Dragon Mortar or Dragon Tortoise)
  • Isawa 威沢 (Prestige Swamp)
  • Bayushi 抜由氏 (Mr. Lost)
  • Shinjo 心助 (Encouragement)

I cannot get google to give me a less enigmatic translation for the bayushi kanji.

It sounds like the only changes to character creation (to answer @bsmith23 's question) then would be:

Is that correct? I feel like the beta rules would get you most of the way there, then. Just have to change void point totals, drop the passions/adversities section and change the starting status on all characters.

Over at the subreddit /r/Rokugan there is a pinned post with a dropbox link full of resources, one of them is a .pub file that you can open with Microsoft Publisher. The file is the character folio that you can edit around and create your own pre-gen character and include any custom portrait.

Don't blame me - it's google's translation of the kanji on the cover... I have no idea how to parse out prestige swamp. Is it a fancy swamp? Is it a swamp named prestige? Is it prestige that smells funny and slows one's movement?
