Doing a draft tournament this weekend, could use some advice

By MandoBard, in Star Wars: Destiny

Out of practice only played the first 2 waves due to moving around after that and haven’t found another shop until now, but I’m completely out of the know on the current waves. Entering a draft tourney this weekend, which I enjoy a good sealed tournament, but was wondering if I should just pull from ways of the force or legacies, and I should probably do all my packs to up my chances on compatibility?

just thought I’d ask. Going to sort out my collection first and throw together a deck or two so I can show up early and get some practice. Also still not getting into competitive level buying/meta competition just for fun and sealed events. Thanks for the advice

Ideally you are looking for a 10 or 9 point character to work in with the 11/10/10 in the rivals set.

After that you are looking for the colours to compliment that mix of characters.

You may fins too that the big 15+ characters with one dice may fall flat.

You will discard a lot of cards to re-roll so be careful you can mill out easily.

Cards that remove dice seem rare.

You can play hero and villan and more than 2 copies of a card.

While we're on the topic, I have a much dumber question.

I'm new to the game, and there's a local store that does drafts for SWD regularly around here. I've been told that it's the best way to pick up lots of cards for a new player, but I don't really know how it works.

So can someone explain how draft tournaments work?

The readers digest version: You buy a rivals pack (if you don't yet have one) and 6 boosters. You open 3 of the boosters and take one card and pass the rest left. You then take the cards the fellow on your right passed you and take one passing again to the left. Once you have taken 15 cards you open the remaining three packs, this time you pass right.

One you have finished you take your 30 cards and the 20 from the rivals pack and build a 20-30 card deck.

At the end of the evening you'll probably find the regulars are only after a few rares and the legendaries. As such you'll pick up a good number of cards without too much trouble.

We went right then left in our group. Had an awesome time took second(albeit with a by) only lost to the guy who took first and it’s because I tried to be aggressive with what turned out to be a monster mill deck. Ran Anakin, Nute GunrY and old lady Leia(who I pulled out of my second batch of packs, and someone else pulled her too, also pulled the grand inquisitors lightsaber from the other batch). Almost had the guy I lost to, he was down to his last 5 cards and I wasn’t even focused on milling(he was running a Gungan deck with Jar Jar, Boss Nass, Gungan Warrior, a Jawa and a plot). Other match was a lot of fun because I beat an Anakin, OL Leia and Jedha extremist, so we both milled each other till I wound up winning with 4 cards left. Took home a new playmat, fun small group of 7, and they play monthly so I’ll try to catch them again. Got invited to another draft tonight I plan to catch since I already have rivals

Congrats on the good tourney, MandoBard, and thanks for explaining how it works, Amanal.

There's a gaming store around here that's huge on SWD (and other CCGs). They do two tourneys every week - one draft and one constructed. So I'll probably try it at some point. But being new to the game, I've already spent a bit of money on the starter decks and a few boosters just to get started, so I may wait a week or two to give my wallet a break. Playing in the draft tourney would be $30 the first time - $15 for the Rivals deck, and $15 entry fee, which is fair for the 6 boosters.

Got 4th, with a 2-1(the other 2 2-1’s lost to the 3-0) but had a good time, and I think I’ve found my shop. Doing constructed Wednesday, and giving the dbs tcg a go

Hey MandoBard,

That was me you milled playing the other old lady Leia deck. I've only played at Junction Games. Seems to always be a nice laid back group. See you around.

Had a good time too, definitely plan to catch the next draft there, thinking I’m doing the best there is for my weekly though

We had a few new players attend our drafts, the 5 regulars who only keep 1-3 of the cards they pull and give away 25+ cards over a few weeks and different sets can many a new player go from next to no cards to a fairly decent collection of common, uncommon and rares for a modest cost.

Sounds like the group at the store near me. I showed up for my first draft yesterday. When it was over, the experienced players donated most of the cards to the noobs like me, so I walked away with tons of commons and uncommons, along with more rares than I expected. Most of it was from Way of the Force, because the experienced players want the newest stuff, but I picked Legacies for my packs.

I didn't do so well, at least partially because I felt like I needed to draft cards that I wanted for my collection, rather than the best stuff to play that night. So I got some rare and legendary cards that I may use in a constructed deck later, but didn't get a very good deck together.

I ended up 1-2, just barely beating out the only 0-3 guy in the final game. We went into the last round with both of us having only 3 health left on our final character, so it was a race to see who could do that last 3 damage first, and I got lucky.
