Navigation questions

By Danger3, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Apologies if there is already a thread for this. I'm playing my first game of RT. Slow going, but fun over wave. People in different time zones and everything. I'm playing the (rank 1)Navigator, and am attempting the first warp jump. I'm not sure if I am doing things correctly.

I passed the test for stage 1, but stage 2, not so much!

stage 2 locate astronomican (ordinary {+10} awareness test)

roll against per 40

1d100: 97

(catastrophic fail)

p184, must now pass a hellish (-60) navigation (warp) test to chart a course.

So I now I have to do the hellish test. Modifiers are added to the player's side, not the die side, correct? With my character's intelligence score being 39, that comes out to

39+ -60(hellish warp test) vs 1d100

-21 vs 100

There is no way to do that roll. Am I doing something wrong?

You seem correct. Until the GM decides to let you try again for some reason he thinks up you are stuck in whatever place you where before trying to enter the Warp. Probably something like spending a week recalibrating Warpdrives, a warpstom was to blame and has passed, you Navigator accidentally held the Maps with the wrong side up and it takes several days to notice, something damaged the Navigator's dome and needs to be repaired first and you need some hard to get stuff that thankfully you can find on that planet over there (yes, that one with all the orks on it), a Tyranid Hive fleet occluded the light of the Astronomican and you need to wait till it has passed before you can try again (have a Genestealer fut... nice future my friend), some Eldar/Tzeentch mucked about because they want you to be a few days late to your next appointment, or whatever else your DM can think up.

Basically it's up to your GM when and if you can try again and what/wether bad things happen as a result of your failure.

(I should probably start thinking something up now, for when my Players' Navigator ineviteably fails his roll the same way)

Wow thats Harsh!!!!

I guess this is when a 01 always counts!

I burnt a fate point for a re-roll, because our party cannot wait around to repair o whatever. We are about to run a Chaos blockade in an attempt to save an imperial world.

Passed it that time.
