Moralo's ability at the end game

By balindamood, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Rulebook, page 9, Winning the Game : "After this phase ends (End phase), the players check to see if somebody has won the game. If only one player had a ship remaining in the play area, that player wins."

Moralo's Pilot Ability: " If you would flee, you may spend 1 charge . If you do, place yourself in reserves instead. At the start of the next Planning Phase, place youself within range 1 of the edge of the play area that you fled from."

So it would seem, if Moralo is the last ship for Player A, and he uses his ability, he would just lose the game. Is this true?

IF is IS true, how would it be scored if Moralo was worth 80 poi tshirts, and the "winner" had only 60 points left on the board? Moralo was not technically destroyed?

Anyone figured this out yet?

Never mind. Rules Reference clarifies that ships in reserve are not "removed from the game" and that winning the game requires all of your opponent's ships to be "removed from the game".

I guess the rules reference trumps the rulebook?

Yes the RR trumps the rulebook.

Which brings up a curious question regarding the recent Boba Fett (crew) conundrum (assuming that FFG hasn't fixed the problem yet...

IF both players have Fett crew, and one is prevented from being placed on the battlefield due to tactical placement of the other... and if that means the opposing Fett has to be trapped in reserves for the rest of the game... can that player still win, by accruing enough points such that losing the remainder of his squad is not enough to overcome his advantage, and the ship in reserves holds on for the win?

Example:

  • Your Squad = 200 points
    • Friendly Ship with Boba Fett = 100 points
    • Rest of your squad = 100 points
  • Their Squad = 199 points (they choose to be first player)
    • Enemy ship with Boba crew = 100 points
    • Rest of their squad = 99 points
  • Gameplay
    • During deployment, your Boba is forced to not deploy.
    • You manage to destroy 101 points of your opponent's ships
    • Since you have 101 points secured, and your opponent can destroy (at most) 100 points, the game is functionally over...?

Aheh

That is a HILARIOUS way of point fortressing if you think you're in a mismatched list situation...

Similarly, there is an obvious question of what happens if the Boba player brings ONLY the ship with Boba (maybe with a nice expensive docked Z95 as well for Salvo purposes) on it, and just chooses not to deploy it at all. As read, this would just instantly trigger final salvo, though technically you'd have to wait for time.

It would need ruling on, as it's a pretty obvious troll tactic.
