Battle in a hex with only routed units ?

By Decaramas, in Runewars

Hi guys,

I have looked here and on other sites but cant find my answer, so I presume its obvious happy.gif .

I have only read the rule book and am preparing to run through a solo two player game, so don't know if this situation is even possible. if i force an opponent to retreat after a battle, all his units become routed, if i ( or another player) then battle with another force and they are still routed are they just destroyed since they cant move? i understand that i still get to draw cards bit at the end of the fight i am going to have more strength, ( unless some magic gets them to stand up or hits me with a bolt).

Is this correct?

thanks for the help

every time you battle, you get to draw cards for all of your units unless they are routed or destroyed.

This is good, as if you are undead you might summon reanimates with necromancers, or if you are human, you might get tactics cards with knights.

If you dont want to draw the cards because they dont matter (you dont have one of these two units) then you dont have to, but you might want to anyways, as the discared fate cards are visible to all, and this information may be something you want.

By the rules you do have to draw the cards, even if they wouldn't matter; however, I doubt too many people would complain about a house rule that saved time by skipping unnecessary card draws.

Thanks, so it is as i thought having someone battle your routed units without something up your sleeve is deadly sorpresa.gif

Per the rules, units that are already routed when a battle begins in the hex do not participate (they stay on the hex while all participating units are taken off and set up alongside your faction sheet.) If the entire enemy force is routed when you move in, the battle will be very brief. You still draw for all your units, but technically there are no enemies facing you in battle (you can't choose to kill any of the enemy units using damage or orb abilities since none of the enemy units are actually involved int his battle.) Unless you have necromancers or daquan knights in your force, I don't think there's any outcome of drawing cards that could possibly affect the game (other than cycling cards to change the probabilities of future draws from the fate deck, if you're the type of gamer who worries about that.)

After you're done fighting against nothing, the battle ends and you win (unless you somehow managed to reduce yourself to zero strength you will win the battle.) Having taken control of the hex, all enemy units will then be forced to retreat, and since all present units are routed, they will be destroyed. End result is "yes, all the enemy units will be destroyed."

If you DO somehow manage to reduce your own strength to zero in the process of fighting the battle, then you will be tied and ties go to the defender IIRC, so you would have to retreat from the hex. That would be quite a feat, of course, since you have no opposition, but I won't go so far as to assume it's impossible.

All this is assuming the enemy doesn't have a stronghold in the second hex. If he did, then the strength of the enemy force would be higher than zero, so you'd just have to make sure you stayed above that line.

lightning and the commander title that gives you +2 combat resolution for each dragon rune token can let you win a battle when you are defending with only routed units... its actually quite funny to see the look on your opponent's face when they realize they forgot to take into account the bonus for that title.

Thanks Steve-O, that explains it very clearly. I really cant wait to get this game going.
