Quick Temptation Question

By VOP2288, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

I’m playing through the Temptation side mission (Diala’s special mission in the Core Set). When Vader appears it says he only is defeated when his health is reduced twice the threat level.

So, just to make certain, that means that his health of 16 is null in lieu of this rule?

More importantly, does this mean his health is twice the threat level of EVERY round or just the round in which he spawned?

For example, the threat level at his spawning was 10. So that means his health is 20. However, if he survives this round and the threat increases to 14 does that mean his health is now 28?

The threat level is set for each mission, it's not based off of how much threat the imperial player has at the time. If the threat level is 4, the imperial player gets 4 threat at the end of each round, and that's the number you use to figure out Vader's health pool. The 16 on his card doesn't matter for this mission.

Be literal when you read the rule. Vader's Health doesn't change. The mission just ends when he has suffered damage equal to twice the threat level. (This means that e.g. Assault Armor does not have an effect. Increasing Vader's Health doesn't change the mission end condition, it's still twice the threat level.)

Note that threat level is (usually) constant during a mission. (The Threat level value from the campaign log.)

Threat (always referred to with the D symbol) is the currency you pay for deploying figures. (Starts at 0, increased each Increase Threat Step of the status phase by the threat level, potentially from a Special Setup.)

"Has Suffered X damage" = When there are X damage tokens on the figure.

Okay, so I was using the wrong wording in my OP.

I meant “threat level” as in the total amount of threat currently had by the Imperial player, not the amount of threat gained each status phase.

The health for Vader is determined by level then and not total amount. So since the mission threat level is 4 that means he has 8 health instead of the 16 on his card and since the level is static for the mission it never changes.

Got it. Thanks for clarifying the terminology guys!

Vader's Health does not change. The mission ends when he has suffered 8 (or more) damage. (Threat level 4)

Like I said, this distinction matters in conjunction with abilities that affect Health, such as Assault Armor.

Yeah, the key concept (which is very, very easy to miss when reading the rules!) is that Threat Level and Threat are different things. Threat level is constant for the mission (in all but a few weird missions that specify otherwise), whereas threat is the currency that the imperial spends throughout the mission.

Yeah, this seems to be a constant in FFG, my experience with playing this, Legion, Armada, and Arkham Horror is that sometimes they’re too specific about rules (to the point where it becomes confusing) while other times they’re way too broad or vague.

Oh well, that’s why we got forums like this.

I think it's easier for the English-speakers to confuse threat level with D (threat), because in the spoken language you can't indicate when you're using the threat symbol. (The threat symbol is always used in the abilities and rules instead of "threat".)

Maybe with enough thought they could've come with a better term, but it's a burden we have to bear now.
