I had so much fun modeling this Snowspeeder! This is an original 3D model made from scratch by me.

My goal was to pack as much intricate detail into the model as I could for a miniature at X-wing size.

I printed this using Shapeways in the Fine Detail material, and I'm pretty happy with the level of detail that came out in this print!

This Snowspeeder mini is available at Shapeways under my shop Starlight Miniatures: https://www.shapeways.com/product/5XDGU2NAU/hover-speeder-high-detail-sci-fi-miniature

I made up some custom pilot cards! I've always thought that the Rebel Snowspeeder should behave like the Imperial Tie Striker, so the stats are based on that.

Beautiful model.

It looks a bit big for X-Wing Scale.

Still. It looks great.

Can't actual tell by the pictures if the size is correct. The actual speeder is 5.3 meters longs, so in 1/270 that would be 1.96 cm

I've bought mine from Mels Miniatures on Shapeways and they also look nice. But I must admit that your model is a piece of eye candy too! ?

Awesome!

Can you take a picture of it next to an X-Wing?

Sure! (The new forum is limiting how many pictures I can post...let's see if this works...)

Yea, I'd recommend posting stuff to imgur or the like to post pics. And it looks really nice next to them, thanks for the pic! :)

Tried my hand at making a 360 degree view of the model:

I guess at table-distance, the grainy surface looks just like rust effect. Wonderfull model.

I wanted to compare my snowspeeders with yours. (As said, they are from Mels, printed in FUD) Unfortunately I do not have such a close-up at hand, but from this picture you can already tell that your snowspeeder is seriously more detailed. Perfectly done.

@Minaith I'm so glad you like the model! Yeah, for the bit of texture on the surface...I'm a more entry-level painter, and the spray paint brand I happened to use for the base coat added the texture you see...I actually ended up liking the effect, especially considering I'm fairly new to painting miniatures, since it breaks up the surface and makes it feel a little more like a worn & weathered vehicle, but the 3D printed model itself is much smoother...would love to see what a more experienced painter could do with it!

Here's a photo of the 3D printed snowspeeder unpainted! The print itself is smoother than my final paint job...I really love the Fine Detail prints from Shapeways...all the detail is incredible, and the precision is so high any print line texture is quite minimal (and disappears when painted). If any more skilled painter might be willing to try out the model and give it a really nice paint job, that would be awesome!

Yisus. Unpainted speeder looks like a b&w illustration.

What a neat little ship! I've gotta agree that the final print looks a bit rough, though. Would a filler primer help to smooth out the print lines and give the mini a smoother finish?

@Wildonion thanks for taking a look at my model and joining the discussion! For print quality...have you had an opportunity to hold any Shapeways Fine Detail material 3d prints in your hand yet? It's ridiculously detailed... I've shown this print to a bunch of people in person, and one of them literally said it "didn't even look 3d-printed," it looked as smooth as a plastic mold-injected part. Shapeways reports that the 2 resolutions of its Fine Detail prints are 29 micron layers (this pictured print) and the even more detailed 16 micron layers, which would be 34 layers (or 62 layers) EACH MILLIMETER. And you're absolutely right, a layer of paint or even a filler primer would make any faint print lines disappear completely (just be sure that the paint layer doesn't get too thick and hide a bunch of the small relief details)...that would definitely be the way to go!
