What should I fly my Ebon Hawk as?

By mazz0, in X-Wing

Just got one of Mel's Ebon Hawks. I was going to fly it as a Falcon, but given how small it is* I'm thinking maybe a YT-2400? I could use custom cards for actual Hawk pilots and crew, but I doubt anybody's done 2.0 versions of those and anyway I think most of the people I'll be playing with will want to play against tournament legal stuff (cards anyway).

*I know it's the official canon size, I'm not blaming @melminiatures - it's a lovely model. I think the canon size is wrong though - the internal model of the Hawk shows it to have a much roomier cabin than the Falcon, but the canon size makes it smaller. I shall head-canon this as saying they wanted it to be small and cramped but that interfered with the player character moving around in it in-game, since the engine wasn't complex enough to have you move through tight spaces.

Got the Armada Ebon Hawk pack as well - 's lovely!

What about using the old 1.0 stats for the Outer Rim Smuggler YT-1300, but otherwise treat it as a YT-1300 (maybe keep the 1.0 dial as well).

That keeps it fairly official.

I dunno, I think using 1.0 stuff is pretty much just as unofficial as using complete home-brew stuff, in that's it's 100% not something they'll face in a tournament. I'll have to see how the regular players feel about it, they might not care.

Oh. That was not my impression of what you wanted.

The YT-24 might be a good pick. Good dial and stats.

Doesn't the cool miniature preclude it from being fairly official?

How much of a strech would it be to run it on a small base as HWK? Surely won't be much worse than 1.0 Reapers, ARCs, etc. Kinda seems the best fit for such an old ship concerning dial and durability.

I could see this. The Ebon Hawk's guns were a bit more powerful than the ones on a HWK-290 but allot slower to turn so the 2 die turret would work. Jam would be the issue though, aside from size. I don't remember the Ebon Hawk being able to jam other ships in either TOR installment.

It precludes it from being tournament legal, but doesn’t preclude it from being practice for a tournament*, only the cards do that.

* for my opponent, I don’t care myself

It’s actually the perfect size for a medium base, but I think would be crazy big on a small base.

Video game interiors are always oversized and should NEVER be taken as an accurate way to judge sizes.

Possibly a U-Wing?

What about the Scum YT-1300? The YT-2400 would be decent but I don't think the Ebon Hawk had 4 Attack Dice chucking turrets, at least not that I can remember.

True, but I was thinking with it’s small size it might have increased agility...

Yeah but when the game is the original source material. Also, perhaps mostly, it was *so obviously* meant to be a substitute for the Millenium Falcon that it always felt like it would be a very similar size.

Then how about the HWK-290? Both ships have H(a)WK in their name, of sorts, and the weak armor could be credited to it being made of older materials. Or you could go Jumpmaster 5000 but that comes with the ehhhhhh Rotate action.

Faction you're looking at subbing it into?

Yeah, even when the video game is the original source. The limitations of a video game environment simply preclude a rationally sized interior space.

Do you have any pictures? I was just looking at it’s stats, and it is supposed to fall between the 2400 and the 1300 size wise.

Good question. I kinda just assumed Rebels, but no reason it has to be. Depends how you played KotOR I suppose!

To be fair, the films aren’t exactly renowned for logical or consistent sizing either.

I shall take some screenshots, hang on...

I meant pictures of the miniature. Preferably compared to the falcon and/or outrider. You were making it sound like the miniature is noticeably smaller than those, but it looks like it is actually supposed to be bigger than the outrider.

I’ll do that too, hang on....

Model, showing canon size:

IMG_1301.HEIC

It’s got roughly half the interior volume of the Falcon there, I’d say. It never felt that small in the games, and I don’t think it was meant to. It was meant to be a pseudo-Falcon.

In-game exterior shot of the cockpit:

Now it’s certainly got a case of it’s-bigger-on-the-inside™ but there’s more to it than that. Look at that central console between the pilot and co-pilot seat - you just couldn’t fit something like that in the Falcon.

I think it should be about 10-20% larger.

Going large base due to the scale that you show in your reference pics. Scum (For those of us that tried to find a way off the rails that KotOR and KotOR2 stuck us to. Heck with being a Jedi or Sith. I want to be me :) . ) side the Lancer looks like an okay fit. Rebels (For the goodie goodies) wise the YT-2400 has way too much punch so YT-1300 looks best to me there. For Imperial (for the Dark Side Revans and Suriks) I'm thinking Decimator is the closest option. Honestly, with the exception that it is as fast as a TIE, the Lancer matches up to the Ebon Hawk best out of the large based options with the Decimator coming a close second. The Falcon just doesn't feel right for how the Ebon Hawk flew and fought.
