Quick Build Thoughts.

By Magnus Grendel, in X-Wing

For my thoughts on the Imperial Quick Builds, see here:

I got my first game of 2.0 the other day and it left me wondering about how balanced the quick builds are. Don't get me wrong, I like the different style of play - quick to throw squads together, and no real restrictions if you want an ace with a super-blinged-out-chassis, or whatever. I really hope we see scenario-specific or event-specific threat level cards - a 'threat card editor' would be a great thing for FFG to produce to support cinematic play style events.

So.....first pass on the various quick builds. How much are they actually worth?

Nominally, 1 threat is ~ 25 points, because 8 threat is a full squad.

Below is shown the various pilots and what their 'points value' should be for their quick-build loadout

Now, don't take this as definitive - the Inferno Squadron TIE fighters, for example, go up in value massively relative to their solo 'cost' because their abilities synergise so well (provided Seyn can get a bullseye lined up).

But there are some unpleasant trends. TIE fighters are probably worth less than implied here, because a modification for them is expensive (they're agility 3) but not that valuable since you're adding a single hit point to a not-very-threatening ship. Equally, Han Solo is a threat 5 ship with a tactical scrambler - when any ship he is 'protecting' must by definition be a less valuable target than he is, and Evaan Verlain needs a focus token at the start of the engagement phase to use her ability, making expert handling pretty pointless. Strom lacks the action economy to use cluster missile bonus attacks effectively.

I'm looking forward to playing with these.

The one thing I look forward to the most are combos that you can't take in normal play because of missing slots. E.g. Fang with Afterburners.

Indeed. I should underline that quick builds aren't 'just' premade for people who can't be bothered; a good - third, maybe? - of quick builds are impossible because they have double mods (like Vader), or talent upgrades on pilots who don't normally have them (like Night Beast), or whatever.

Equally, the fact you can't pick, choose and tweak makes some options disproportionately valuable. Free-built imperial squads often name-check a Lambda or Reaper, but if limited to threat cards, the only option you currently have is Zertik Strom - as the only guy currently to carry squad leader. Rebels have no-one with co-ordinate (but Garven Dreis and/or Dutch Vander do much the same job provided you want target lock or focus specifically) and Scum get the escape craft docket to the YT-1300 if you're happy to undock it.

I play few games with a friend with only Tie Fighter and X-Wing and have some fun.

The main advantage is it really easy to play with/for beginners and you don't need many ships to play. The escalation variant add some tactics with the hyperspace token placement and more choice.

And despite what people said Luke is not impossible to kill, powerful yes but not invincible my Iden Versio and Black Squadron Ace can confirme that.

I think I will stick on this format, it's really good !

Agreed. Although that is 4 threat facing off against 3. It's Luke's firepower in a 2v1 as much as his durability that's a pain in the neck - although admittedly Iden is the perfect counter to that as one set of torpedoes just goes 'thwip' into non-existence.
