The Overnight Report - NOVA

By Captain Weather, in Star Wars: Armada

Very much appreciate these Overnight reports. As a relatively new player I love seeing the insight that is added to top performing lists and the analysis involved.

Thank you again.

So this one is going to be a big-old multi-parter because there's a lot to go through.

Day 1A coming in hot.

One thing to note is NOVA’s tournament structure. It had two flights (Day 1A and Day 1B) which both played five rounds of Swiss. After Swiss the Top 2 players from each day plus the next four highest ranked players from a combined standing would move on to the Top Cut. Those eight players would then play an additional three rounds of Swiss to determine the overall winner.

One little hint to FFG. This is the right way to do and should be done on the worlds as well (when there is not enough room for one big seat over two days).
This would even make the twitch steams way more interessting compared to the, more or less, boring one this year ? .

Armada is just not made for cuts. The games are just total different when it comes to elimination instead of swiss.
And the change to top2 from each day + the next best 4 is great.

About the lists: Really funny how different these are to the german nationals. Way less squadrons in the top places. Even when the two A-Wing lists have at least some squadrons, i assume they are mainly against squadrons, even when the black die can hurt really well against ships.

But i am a bit suprissed by the Sloane list. But when these low squadron list are so common (i don't know the rest of the lists), these TIE Bombers can work. But normally i would not take TIE Bombers in a Sloane list. It feels wasted (but this is my opinion).

And the cut break looks a bit lower. 34 points for a top 4 (i know it was top2 + 4 best from both days) looks low. But might because of the lower number of players. This looks like there were a lot of close games.

Sean and Adam flying each otherz fleets based on their histories....

Coming in with Day 1B analysis.

Also Tokra I'm definitely going to discuss that in the Top Cut (this model being the better choice for Top Cut).

It would probably take a comparable amount of time to run three additional rounds of Swiss as it would to play out the extended time limit crawls that are currently being played. It's just so much more exciting as well.

Great write up again, thanks Luke!

Really fascinating to see Ron's list do so well with an average MOV of 300 pts per game! You're right in that it is a great meta call and would probably have done very well in the UK too (judging based on what was at nationals) but would have probably been absolutely trounced if it had shown up at the German Masters with all those squad-heavy lists.

Interesting too that the 2nd and 3rd lists in here also have lots of squads. Presumably they didn't play each other (based on their overall scores and Ron's SoS) but I could be wrong.

These lists look really interessting (and strange, for me).

A Raddus list with this squadrons? This seems only to work on a non squadron meta. But it seems it worked, or he would not have get the 45 points. After all i have no idea how many squadron lists were there.
A Imp-Squad List with with Interdictor and only 3 activations? I am a surprissed that it was Thrawn and not Sloane (Firespray out, Aces in).
The list from @themightyhedgehog is just nice, and i had nearly the same list as backup for myself.
And a list that looks so unusal and extraordinary (in a good way!) that it is great to see something in the top places.

In the end is is really great that even with this format the top 4 of each day came into the cut. One more reason why this system is the best one (from all 2 day seats).
And it is nice that nearly all ships are in the top 8 (only the VSD is missing, i wonder why....).

Out of curiosity: differences being? The objective suit, I'd guess tailored to farming like the list you ended up taking? Anything more?

I had this Fleet as Backup.

Same squadrons, same ships. Just a bit different upgrades (Comms Net instead of Bright Hope, Adar Tallon on Transport and not Pelta, FC instead of Skilled First Officer on Yavaris, ...)
And my missions were the same as they were in the MC80 list (token farming). Didn't noticed the missions were this different.

I don't like Most Wanted anymore. Raddus made it nearly pointless (i became nearly an auto pick for Raddus as first player). Precission Strike might have been better in this list as well. But this is a personal decission.
Superior Positions (SP) or Sensor Net (SN) is not such a big difference. SP has the bonus of the deployment, SN the bonus for farming without the opponent and the pressure in the first turn (same as Fire Lanes). But both want to farm tokens.

I tried a similar list with Garm as my admiral in a recent store champs - just wanted to try something a bit different and see how much damage I could do with vanilla B-wings.

Red Objective is always the one I struggle with most and I have same problem with Most Wanted as Raddus is so common! Precision Strike can really hurt if opponent has APTs and I tend to find I always want to use my hits to do damage rather than crits but have considered it with Asoka Tano to change the free tokens. Close Range Intel scan was actually handy for the Dust Fields to hide behind and would normally pick up 30-40 points from points.

Don't get so many squads in UK (unfortunately) so I've gone with getting past enemy squads rather than trying to kill them.

Nice to see a Pelta in a list for Nova day 2!

Does anyone have a picture of the whole final standings from heat 1B?

I played The top two. 5-6 both games. And came in third*.

Update.

I actually ran a list at an SC just a couple weeks ago that was the EXACT same ships comp as the top list. I just kitted her out differently. That is wild!

Wow tough draw for you then! So Ron had three 10:1s and a 9:2 before he played you then. Well done getting the Pelta so close to the top!

But man, 3 rounds, following 5 the day before gets looooong. 8 games in two days...

Or get awesome! (but long is probably closer to being right)

Long. Definitely long. I'm still in an Armada coma.

*cough*
Euro 2017. 9 rounds swiss (in 2 days) and 2 rounds cut (on the 3rd day).
And at first they wanted to do 10 rounds swiss.

Like, how do you make any good decisions the last few games? I was spent after 8 and making terrible decisions in the last game. Potentially 11 games would be crazy.

I don't want to talk about this :P

Jeremy and I were joking during our game on day2 that it was a miracle either of us were in the finals given how we were playing. We both went full bonobo mode. It was embarrassing.

12 games in one weekend would be straight silly.

No spirit these americans

I don’t know much about bonobos, but from the little I do know this disconcerting. How were you not expelled from the event?
