[Help / Advice needed] Masked paint chipping on edges

By WanouMars, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Hi all!

I just got an airbrush and rushed into giving it a try last weekend.

I did apply 1 coat of Vallejo Game Air Yellow, which went great, then I masked some parts with Humbrol Maskol to apply a green layer on top (Vallejo Fluo Green + medium green, with airbrush thinner and flow improver).
When I removed the Maskol layer, the second color (3,5 layers) chipped at the edges (see picture).

I'm considering using an eraser on these edges to remove the extra material by rubbing, hoping that something will remain, and do some touch ups.

I probably build green layers too thick, and with wrong ratios of airbrush thinner. My questions are:

- What steps do you recommend for fixing?
- Would waiting for longer paint drying time help?
- Would you have any other advice beyond building thinner layers?

I had great results with brush / masking tape, so got a bit disappointed with my new toy.

Your input would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks!

After 24 hours of drying, the chips have recessed and a 30 mins touch up fixed all the ships :D

Ideas still welcome :)

Can't wait to finish this 6-ship Jurassic Park batch :)

Thanks!

Well... first of all:practice. You can read all you want, watch all the videos but in the end you must feel the force flow within you.

In this case, like you said, keep the layers thin. Such a vibrant colour probably requires over 4 layers to build up nicely.

Maskol it's quite thick. So there is a big ridge where your paint can kling on to. Therefore you need to spray away from the maskol and not against it. After you paintjob is done, carefully remove the masking asap. The longer the paint dries. The harder and more brittle it becomes leaving a ragged edge.

I hope this helps you a bit.

Thank you, @Noosart ! I'll give that a good thought next time I turn the compressor on! :)
