New Ascended Career Idea!

By D4M0CLES, in Dark Heresy

Here is some idea if would like to see as new Ascended Career in an Ascension tier supplement:

- Calidus assassin: I would like new talents and stuff for creating an assassin that use subterfuge to kill. Impersonating others and poisonning them or sabotaging stuff and kill in a way that looks like accident. That woudl be awesome to see this temple in a third Assassin ascended career.

- Elite Merc: A new combat career for guardsmen and scum that is not linked to the militant. You would be part of a prestige groupd of merc and could definitely be paid by an inquisitor for your more underground fighting prowess.

- Corporate Mastermind: Imagine a career where you are at the higher echelon of a big corporation or criminal cartel. Something less combat based than Desperado for scum. This would be a great addition to the Inquisitor group and works well with the influence system.

- Commissar: I dont know but for me this could be a great ascended carrer for guardsmen or assassin. The Commissar was given power to ensure a regiment's continuing loyalty, and was charged to do anything necessary to prevent the corruption or spread of Chaos. It is more military based but could be working with an Inquisitor who is more military oriented.

- Sororitas Paladin: That could be highest rank in the Sororitas sisters and a career wich improves the faith system for these sister of battle.

Here is my idea...

Waiting for yours :)

I think the Callidus Assassin is definitely a must (I was surprised that they kinda dropped the political/subterfuge assassin).

I like the idea of an elevated Sororitas class, although keep in mind that only 1 of the 3 chosen paths was combat-oriented. The commissar class would be cool and definitely fits with the Influence game. How about a Sister Repentia, sent out from her order to serve and die for the Emperor, although that character would be pretty close to the Death Cult Assassin, minus the silent subtly.

My opinion is that the Elite Merc class is the same as the Stormtrooper; you just went to a different school. The Corporate class might have issues with divided loyalties and Profit Factor (vs. Influence) unless you were looking at an advanced Adept class similar to an Infiltrator.

My suggestions would be to add a non-techpriest mechanic class. My thought is the Guardsman or Scum or even an Adept who has tinkered enough to be a weaponer/armourer/vehicle mechanic (well, might be worth more if they release a vehicle guide... hint, hint; please, please.)

Another would be the Faceman. Pretty much any non-Ecclesiarch/Techpriest who goes undercover, keeps multiple identities, etc. I was thinking more of the Fellowship based class as opposed to someone like the Callidus Assassin.

Hell, how about the Culexus Assassin since it seems like the anti-psyker keeps getting lost. You would have to be an Untouchable I would guess.

Just a few ideas.

Thx for the feedback!

Tought i see more Culexus as a NPC only assassin...

The Culexus Assassins possess the "Pariah Gene", making them to all intents soulless, accounting for their having no warp-presence. This gene manifests itself very rarely, in a single individual among a billion, or more. This extreme rarity, coupled with the inevitable losses during training, makes the Culexus assassins the rarest of all Imperial assassins.

I can't see Culexus as being free-minded. They are psy consuming horror, something more akin to the Eversor.

For the Corp Mastermind idea... i see it as an influence oriented ascended scum. Hes at the top of a noble house or corporation, controlling the underworld. Kind of a rough concept right now...

I do not see a purpose for a Ascended Commissar. Perhaps a more Elite Variation of Commissar, such as Commissar Lord or Colonel/General-Commissar. But standard Rank and File Commissar shouldnt be anything more then a Rank 1, 3, 5 thing. Afterall, you dont just become a Commissar, you are raised to be one.

Except when that's not the case. Some Commissars are trained as Cadets fresh from the Schola Progenium... others are Stormtroopers given a new role and new authority, and so forth. There isn't a single path to becoming a Commissar.

Well, I would like to see Callidus Assasin, Enforcer (action arbitrator as opposite to judge), Imperial Guard Officer and Explicator Ascended careers. (Not that I have the Ascension yet:( but I hope there is some Throne Agent“s Handbook in making)

The Desperado already covers the Face Man, what with Criminal Mastermind and other options, as does the Hierophant, with his Voice of the Emperor. The Judge isn't bad at it either, after a fashion. I agree that the more social Assassins are left floundering, so something like Callidus or similar would be nice, or giving the option for Assassin to go Desperado, which is possibly the easier fix.

Something I find is missing, is something for a strategic commander, as opposed to a non-commissioned officer or front-line Captain. Stormtrooper doesn't cut it, and doesn't fit the impersonal, sort of Soviet approach taken to war by those in high position in many regiments of the Imperial Guard. It's difficult to play this sort of character without being a front-line fighter or an Inquisitor. I don't quite think that Sage fits for this.

Another problem that I have with Stormtrooper is that the Stormtroopers aren't made up out of veteran guardsmen. They're trained to be Stormtroopers, and were never regular Guardsmen. The addition 'some veterans get to go train with kids' kinda sucks. To be honest, I don't think Stormtroopers make for good Acolytes or Throne Agents in Dark Heresy. I see them as like your elite boarding parties in Rogue Trader... effectively equipment on a character sheet, like an Inferno Pistol. They don't get much character development, since they're Stormtroopers from birth.

A veteran Guardsman, someone of equal ability to a Stormtrooper, like Sly Marbo, or the penal soldiers in the Last Chancers, for instance, might have more going for them (okay, Sly Marbo won't, but someone who is skilled, but not a Stormtrooper). Of course, I have issues with Inquisitors taking indifferently skilled Conscripts on as Acolytes when there are millions of more experienced troops available to just take, but that's a digression.

The Sororitas gets two good advances in the Crusader and Hierophant, covering her main jobs. I don't really think anything else is needed.

Something extra provided on the website would be nice, suggesting points when and how Rogue Trader classes could switch over to become Ascension characters, such as a high level Rogue Trader taking an Ascension package and becoming an Inquisitor. I like the idea of an Inquisitor with a powerful Astropath in his party, and Missionaries make for better Crusaders than Clerics.

Something simple like, 'once you hit 13K XP, you can take an Ascension package and join X would work. Arch-militants as Crusaders and Stormies. Misionaries like the Cleric. Rogue Traders with Desperado and Stormie. Astropaths, well, would probably continue on with the Astropath career, maybe with access to Ascended talents and traits. Same with Navigators. I think the crossovers should be quite apparent.

I think, with the reworking of the DH careers 'points' in "Ascension" (i.e. rank six at 5000 rather than 6000) works nicely with the Rogue Trader tiers. I'd suppose that an 'ascension' to Seneschal or Rogue Trader pretty effectively covers the cut (just say: access to the first few ranks plus the one you've now achieved of the career in RT) for 'Businessman' type. Not quite as well as a dedicated career, but it strikes me as viable, especially as you're still into the extra-characteristics advances too. And for the Ascension package? Just run them through the Origin Path in Rogue Trader, assuming their homeworld is as per the path (Mind Cleansed get free pick of starting point?) to their selected career. Simple!

That said, I'm searching my head for a few other career options. Similarly for some other Ascension packages too. I'm intrigued, I'll say that!

I'd like to see something along the lines of multiclassing. Sure you spent 8 ranks as Scum, but now you're getting retrained as a Guardsman/Cleric/whatever. Not a perfect effect, but I think there's room for something other than just Elite advances for characters that want to fill roles that fall between careers.
