Film stories that might adapt well to the Star Wars Universe

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing Off-Topic

OK, so people have compared Rogue One to "The Dirty Dozen" and Solo to "Ocean's Eleven". What other film styles, stories and scripts do you think might work well if they were adapted to the Star Wars universe?

The most obvious one I can think of - and one that's been mentioned many times on the forum - would be "Top Gun", set at the Imperial Academy.

Then there's "Hunt For Red October" - another story that could be told from the Imperial perspective, with a disillusioned Imperial commander trying to defect to the Rebellion.

Or "The Terminator" - one bounty hunter is tasked to keep a target alive while another (IG-88 or Bossk) is tasked to kill them at any cost. Another chance to explore the galactic underworld, outside of the traditional light vs dark conflict.

Pls. That. Now! Ideally set on a Raider corvette, so we can have some X-Wing glory on screen!

Rewrite the Captain Phasma story like Captain America the super soldier. Created by the empire, thawed out by the first order.

Critters, with bloodthirsty Porg.

Harry and the Hendersons with a Wampa.

It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World. Through space.

...for starters

Hateful 8, with bounty hunters.

What about something that explores the myriad of alien races a little more?

I’m picturing something a little out there, kind of like a Cohen brothers’ movie. Several eccentric alien races representing archetypes/tropes, plenty of black humour, a little bit of action and gore thrown in too.

Blues Brothers with Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes traveling the galaxy showcasing its many musical styles while trying to save an orphanage or something.

Enemy Mine with a Wookiee and an Ithorian stranded on a planet together and being forced to learn to communicate to survive the harsh environment.

A shot-for-shot remake of Sleep starring Max Rebo.

The Great Escape in space.

All is Quiet on the Western Front from an Imperial perspective.

Make a live action version of the geonosis arc from the clone wars show.

Would be a weird mix of saving private Ryan followed up with aliens.

Would kind of be like from dusk til dawn in that it would almost be like 2 different films in 1.

To be honest, it'd be an interesting way to do the Fett movie.

"Red Tails" for a rookie squadron - on either side, but probably best for rebel/resistance

"Lord Of War" for the first order rearmament programme.

You lost style points for not adding in Big Trouble in Little China.

basicaly any spaghetti western or samurai film, but in particular

Seven samurai/Magnificent Seven/Battle beyond the Stars/A Bugs life

Yojimbo/A Fistfull of Dollars/Django/Last Man Standing

Star Wars is already the story to Big Trouble in Little China.

The alley fight is clearly the Battle of Hoth, and Wang, Egg and Jack are Luke, Obi-wan and Han.

Platoon. On Kashyyk. With Wookiees.

A young Chewbacca smoking Wookiee-weed from the barrel of a bowcaster is now something that I never knew I needed to see until right now.

Boba Fett: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Rogue Squadron: Baa Baa Black Sheep

Jabba the Hutt: The Godfather

Kyle Katarn: Where Eagles Dare

Soontir Fel: The Blue Max

Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine: The Wizard of Oz

Sando Aqua-Monster: Jaws

Lando Calrissian: The Sting

Dune.

It's already 95% Star Wars

This same concept, but with games:

Example:
Forza 5, but all Swoop Bike and Pod Racing

Three Amigos / Galaxy Quest - How actor Garick "Face" Loran ended up as a fighter pilot.

While I don't have a specific movie in mind, I looked up some generic over-used plots that might.

How about "a retired spy goes on one more mission." Finally, a reason to have Bothans on screen.

Wait, is this the Mandalorian plot? "A retired gunslinger reluctantly straps his guns back on when a rich landowner and his gang of hired killers threaten his family and his town."

A bit of genre-bending could be fun. Maybe a horror movie set in that ancient far-away galaxy? Maybe we'll wait for when/if New Mutants gets released and see how that goes.

"Three old friends in desperate need of money rob a bank" could be a good one but we've already got one heist movie (they just weren't old friends in that case).

Mostly, I keep thinking of Wes Anderson films and how insane that sort of film would be in Star Wars. Bill Murray flying around in a run-down correlian corvette converted to a research vessel with trained purgills hunting down the jaguar space worm that ate his friend.

I've said dozens of times now:

Elite: Dangerous + Star Wars =

What I would love to see is a horror movie, akin to Alien, but the creature is Darth Vader.

Seeing a bunch of rebel troops stuck on a ship, trying to formulate plans to defeat Vader could be a lot of fun. Sound wise alone, you have Vader’s breathing echoing in a claustrophobic environment. The sudden snap-hiss of a lightsaber turning on. These sound cues can be put to great effect.

It would provide a different view of vader, that of a monster that he is, requires no dialog on his part, and amplifies the Rogue One scene, but reminiscent of the casual 80’s slasher flick as well.

I thought something similar, but I'd prefer a character like Bossk over Vader. Vader's been seen a lot of times, One of the OT Bounty Hunters would be something fresh and new. Just imagine what could be done with Bossk with modern special and practical effects.

Maybe that's more akin to Predator.

To many older fans, yes, Vader has been seen lots. But I think he is more menacing and single minded. Seeing Bossk, or any if the bounty hunters, on the Clone Wars, they are more of an up front, suprise you in an alley, level threat.

I would love to see Bossk or another Trandoshon move around like they do in clone wars, but in an actual film, but I don't think a horror theme fits them.

Vader can easily pull a rebel into the shadows while he claws at the deck playing, wheras any if the bounty hunters are more likely to just shoot you.

Bossk or just Trandoshan's in general would be pretty good for a Terminator style movie.

They're already known for hunting dangerous prey in jungles. It's a good fit.

Our protagonists could be captured Rebels and an Imperial agent who's made some kind of mistake. They're all dropped at once in a trandoshan hunting ground and then have to decide to work together or fend for themselves. A couple of them would die early on. Eventually the Imp would eventually help one of the Rebels (maybe the only one left) and then they'd work together to fight the one trandoshan that's hunting them, only to find out that he was also being hunted by other trandoshan's... and then they meet their demise.

I don't know...Vader seems to go after his foes head-on, and I can't really think of a reasonable scenario for why he'd be sneaking around picking off grunts one-by-one. It seems a bit...playful for his character, if that makes sense. Some bounty hunters, though, I could totally see taking this approach.
