I would love to see some Hoth Troopers to fight the Snowtroopers. I never quite understood why FFG went with these nebulous rebel troopers that didn't seem to have a place in ANH, TESB, or ROTJ. Glad they eventually rolled out the Fleet Troopers, Rebel Commandos, and the hoped for Hoth Troopers with some Taun-Tauns.

Unit should be defensive, not a snowtrooper clone.
That was probably the MPL-57 that we already have twice. That's definitely in the Battle of Hoth.

I think it would be better to have something like they have white defense dice, but when in heavy cover they roll red defense instead.

They look pretty different to me. If we're talking about the same ones.

Whatever the cover bonus was, in their case, I'd make it apply to all cover not just heavy cover. Partly to make them easier to calculate costs/balance/etc. by taking away a variable. Partly to make them seem good at "digging in".

I think Reikan would make a fair bit of sense, with the Echo Troopers and him being based more around defensive or stalling tactics.

That sounds really great.
I know that some people have suggested Sandtroopers, though I think they might be a little too similar to the Stormtroopers especially when one of the heavy options was a Stormie wearing the backpack and wielding a DLT-19. Imperial Army troopers/Mudtroopers would likely be distinct enough, especially when their designs. Maybe they could even have some kind of ability that gives the unit an Aim or Dodge token when it suffers 1 or more wounds during an attack, representing how the Imperial Commanders just rush them into danger with little regard and how they have to do whatever they can to survive.
Of course, I could be wrong and we end up getting Sandtroopers, FFG will release what they want to.

Precisely what he or she does is irrelevant. For collecting and playing an army to the theme, we'd just need a commander, any rebel commander, in a good winter coat plus Echo troopers as a corps choice. People who don't care about theme will be mixing and matching regardless, to get the stats they want.

Yeah they usually announce things that no one was hyped up talking about prior to the announcement. Like atgar towers.
I think a good way to portray Hoth troopers being defensively oriented would be make you want to not move them. Snow troopers get a free shot after moving, how about Hoth troopers getting a free shot if they do not move. So they could dodge, aim, and then shoot. That would incentivize hunkering down, and holding a position.
Defensive Positions: At the end of your activation, if you did not move, perform a free Recover or Dodge action.
Reikan could provide some sort of bonus like all enemy deployments must be in their starting zone. A counter to rapid deployment and sorta thematically a shield generator where they had to march in

Personally I don't like to have too many "special powers" in a game. It leads to playing the rules instead of playing the game. The incentive for hunkering down is the free blocks that a brick wall gives you. Giving them defensive bonuses just for standing still out in the open is, again, more of how you'd simulate the Predator's camouflage suit or something.
The Hoth troopers will likely just have the stats of the troopers in Hoth garb on the 1.4 FD Laser Cannon pack. Surge to hit and block. DH-17 pistol with 2 white dice each. I would imagine they would lose Nimble though, because snow pants.
A fun tweak for a Hoth Trooper might be a keyword that gives a free aim token when the unit is in heavy cover. I totally see them throwing all white dice.

The problem with that is units are never "in" cover, they "have" cover, which is determined only while defending.

Yes. There's a Tauntaun escrow account.
I never worry about the price of gaming stuff. If I want it I'll find the money. If I "can't find the money" I know it's because deep down I don't actually want it, it's just more useless clutter for the house that has temporarily caught my eye. One way to afford anything you want is to strictly only buy as fast as you paint. Anybody out of high school can usually scrounge the cash for a unit here and there, the trouble is people want to buy a huge army all at once. Buy a unit. Paint it while you get more money. Buy a unit. Paint it while you get more money. Never, ever, ever, field an unpainted unit even for a learning game. Suddenly you will find you have more money and more painting time than you ever thought you would.
Now I have been known to buy huge new armies all at once. But I am trying to stop. The above works way better, and is what I am sworn to do for Legion. It will keep me from buying several copies of [hot new unit] only to find out I hate it, or it got errata'd into oblivion, or left in the dust by [newer hotter unit that I now also itch to buy].
I would really like it if they released mcquarrie concept tauntauns

Most likely would never happen.

I love the McQuarrie concept stuff. He was the main "force" in bringing George Lucas' universe to life. I was so glad when Hasbro/Kenner made a figure for him especially since he was in Hoth Gear. I still display it proudly. FFG could even name a Hoth General for him.

Please send me a link to where I can buy this figure. We must have it, precious.

Sorry, that is going to be the secondary market. This figure came out in 2007 along side the wave of McQuarrie concept figures during the 30th anniversary line. The figure is actually listed as General McQuarrie. He is in Hoth gear and comes with head gear a blaster and a commemorative coin.
