Padded Armor

By Archlyte, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

What are examples of this armor from the movies? Anyone know if this is more like a rigid armor like Laminate or something else? I know it's supposed to be a broad description but how do you usually picture typical padded armor?

IIRC, there's a picture in the equipment section of the Edge core.

Per the description, this is probably the armor the soldiers on the Tantive 4 were wearing when the empire boarded them at the start of the original Star Wars movie:

Quote

Local forces and soldiers of the Rebel Alliance often wear padded armor, woven with tough, energy-resistant fibers. It tends to absorb and resist some of the power of a blaster bolt, although it often proves little use against a solid hit. It does, however, provide reasonable protection against blows or concussive damage, providing padding against such shocks. It also has the advantage of being relatively comfortable; many individuals can wear padded armor without generating too much attention from local law enforcement on frontier worlds.

Traditionally, 'Padded Armor' refers to multiple layers of cloth sewn or otherwise fastened together to provide protection at fairly low cost, such as a gambeson. Of course, the star wars use of the term may differ...

EDIT: As the previous poster mentioned, there is artwork for it on page 177 of the EotE Core Rulebook, though it seems a little 'beefier' than I would expect from the description (Particularly the '...without generating too much attention from local law enforcement...' line).

The rebel troopers on Hoth used padded armor.

The best example of Padded armor comes from the EU, specifically, the outfit worn by Dash Rendar from Shadows of the Empire .

That would actually be Adverse Environment Gear (Cold). Less Soak, but that's necessary so the cold doesn't get to them.

According to the character sheet this is padded armor as well.

I'd go with what the rebel soldiers on scarif are wearing. Most of them have some type of vest on. Similar to what the rebels are wearing on Hoth (harder to see as it's white on white.)

Pretty sure the Naboobies are wearing padded armor.

Of all the examples this seems to me to be the best one. Looks like it means something like the Leather Armor you see in some fantasy games and movies. A compromise between clothing and armor that is flexible.

Dash Rendar looks like a Sex Worker, and the Padded Armor from the book looks like it's from some generic sci-fi setting. I think based on this I need to classify Padded armor in the category of reinforced clothing and not rigid armor.

It's space Kevlar.

Especially as that classification is the main thing separating Padded Armor and the much more expensive Laminate Armor.

I would avoid classifying it too much. We have a system that goes from a 1/0 leather jacket to a 2/1 heavy battle armor. 2/0 padded armor could be anything from really heavy clothes to budget laminate.

I think this is a good point because of the small integers describing this stuff, but I am working up a loot generator and I wanted ot have classifications to put things in and so it had to fit in either reinforced clothing or rigid armors for the purpose of the table. I usually let players describe what their armor is like because the stats are all over the place like you pointed out.

This Bandana is 2 Soak but that Leather Suit is only 1 Soak, etc.

Put it in both? Then you have styles based off of the category and can model everything from Hoth and Naboo troopers to Oskara's budget hard-shell.

Great idea :)

I've always thought of padded armor as looking something like modern Kevlar armor of todays police forces. Just with a more futuristic and durable material.

Padded Armor is most certainly not supposed to be "rigid armor" and the Oskara art's suit doesn't match up well at all with what Padded Armor is supposed to be. The Naboo guards are a far better example of Padded Armor, and the one from the book is, well, the one from the book.

Looking at the art I don't think it was commissioned with that level of detail. After all, she's also wearing a jetpack...

Which will soon be completely unnecessary, as the next Filoni cartoon series will show us that Twi'leks can fly by helicoptering their lekku.

I would place Erso's jacket under the Heavy Clothing entry.

I honestly don't want to know what kinda stuff you're into, if that's the case.
