Gadgeteer Equipment help

By Malashim, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm into a new game with my Gadgeteer and soon the first credits should roll in and buying more equipment will be a thing.

Theme of my BH ist brawling with Cortosis Gloves (mainly for style reasons, and a little bit of origin story - Mandalorian and the gloves are from his clan's olden times-Beskar). Sidearm right now is the HL-27. And he is a bit of the Tank in the Group, so sturdy is a thing but not too much to avoid anything that can hurt him - kills everyone else. Because of that Armored Clothing, later on with superior mod is a thing. And a lot later on maybe a customizable template armor for tons of hardpoints.

When it comes to planned things in my head i want some "High"-Tech gadgets but keeping it light and at least somewhat subtle :

X-30 Lancer + Parrying Vibroblade (both modded) for creatures, animals or people - in cases when dead is better than alive...

The already owned Gloves for knocking people unconscious, just adding a Stun Pulse.

I'm thinking about a Shield Gauntlet to help with sturdy, without stupid amounts of soak early on (although if this will work together with the Gloves is also a question).

My Problem right now is what else? I definitely need something with range (preferably >short) and stun damage as the lancer is "missing" a stun setting, and not planned for doing so. I don't know all books equipment sections so i'm open for advise on some nice weapons/gadgets without going the "Battlearmor, Heavy Blaster Rifle" route :D

Especially the range stun weapon is a problem because something "exotic" would be great for style but i found nothing fitting so far.

Any suggestions are welcome!

It sounds to me like you are a Engaged/Short range tanky type, so for me one of your obstacles is closing the distance quickly and tactically. You need to get your guy up close quickly and get the attention on you so that you can do your thing, but it means that distance is your enemy.

A jetpack or rocket boots may be a good thing, also an ascension gun (or climbing gear as I think they call it in these rules) for snapping a cable to something and either pulling it to you or you to it.

Maybe a glop or stun grenade or two?

Yes that is the way i want to play him, but we all know that there are situations where you are practically unable to do "your" thing as it would be a really stupid idea.

As a BH and Mandalorian i thought of him as the prepping type, if he never uses his blaster except for putting his hand on it to intimidate people and just punching their faces - great. Maybe there will be even rumors that no one wants to know what he would do to people when you finally get him to use that blaster instead of his fists. But on the other side having a lot of options is the BH character code, for me at least.

But rocket boots and grenades sound like a great start, high-tech and small enough for the theme (jetpack came to my mind earlier but it was too cliche and too "big")

And that ascension gun sounds awesome also, already written down.

Remember that cortosis gauntlets are big and conspicuous. They have the same Encumbrance (and thus concealability) as a blaster carbine. These are fingertip-to-forearm coverings, not just gloves.

That is the main reason why i'm not sure if the Cortosis Gloves can even work together with a Shield Gauntlet (even with some mechanics involved), but those are the only big and heavy thing he would carry. I don't want him to be "sneaky" but having his gadgets and surprises beeing less obvious solutions.

Sure i'd prefer a less bulky version but the other brawl weapons didn't make it in the style or versatility section (HPs beeing the main problem - as a Gadgeteer i love HPs), so i had to make a compromise. Shock Gloves were too "basic" (and even worse with HPs) and Backhand Shock Gloves would be an option but when i get the rules right even with Weighted Head and Stun Pulse (with tinkerer) i loose all of those every other round. And this is a no no for the main weapon when brawling is badass in style but lacks a bit in the dmg section.

You want the Sap Gloves from Cyphers and Masks, page 40.

Brawl, Damage +2, Critical 5, Engaged, Enc 1,1 HP, 50 credits, Rarity 4, Concussive 1

Spotting them as weapons is Difficulty 4 Perception check.

Ok those are awesome, is there more stuff like those in the book? Seems like a must have :D

Yes, there's the Armor Insert that lets you quickly make normal clothing (Banal Apparel, Cargo Clothing, Heavy Clothing, etc.) into a better yet cheaper version of Armor Clothing. With three successful Mods, you can have Defense 2 and Soak 2 that's only detectable with Perception 3. There's a whole thread on this one over in the Age of Rebellion forum because it's pretty much broken must-have gear for almost everyone short of those that want to wear the heaviest of armors.

gives Soak, NOT Armor

Ok that sounds quite broken, but the theme of the book seems good enough to be on my list.

Stupid idea: i have already bought Jury Rigged but still haven't chosen where to use it (as i planned to lower the stun activate cost of the Stun Pulse). RAW i can use it to reduce the Encumbrance of the gloves to 1, is there any FAQ i didn't find about RAI when it comes to concealability with weapons and that Jury Rigged option? This could make them a lot more fitting till i get the other book and maybe be a good argument for use with the Shield Gauntlet.

That would make them more concealable, but it's the GM's call on whether you can use another weapon with them because all of the glove weapons are pairs that use both hands.
