Your Favorite 1.0 Memory

By Nyxen, in X-Wing

Since 2.0 will be in everyone's hands soon, let us leave 1.0 with fond memories, and cast aside thoughts of what it became. In that spirit I ask you, what was your favorite moment in 1.0?

I have 2; the first being a whisper mirror duel in a regional. My opponent and I had cleared out each other's support and were vying to get the final arc to seal the deal. After several turns of decloak into decloak with no shots fired, I barrel roll decloaked into a K-turn right behind his, and with the tv's target lock from last shot the game was mine.

The other was out Fenning Fenn. My opponent had a Parattani variant and had put Fenn in a position where he had to hard 1 or hit a rock. I had 5-forward-boosted Soontir at the formation hoping for range 3 shots, and was in perfect position to 5 straight-boost-roll for the block and get range 1 on his Inaldra, which lucky dice decided would come off the board with that shot.

Realizing there was a game based on Star Wars that was unlike anything else I'd seen before.

PEW PEW BOOM!!

My last game of 1.0

An Echo Guri 1v1

EDIT: Its Echo I feel stupid, must be because 2.0 whisper is gonna be a special friend of mine

Winning dice for the 1st time. So sweet. (Thank goodness FFG didn't change the dice for 2.0)

Generating over 20 stress on one y wing and over 15 shields on Corran. In the same game.

My first 3-0 tournament result.

Shredding pre-Genius nerf Nym Miranda with Rainbow TIE/D Deltas is up there.

Running from Quickdraw for 15 minutes on Poe, before bothering to check the points... my 43 to his 42, so it just barely worked out, but it could have gone very wrong.

Flew a great losing game in my last SC match. Lots of lead changes, which feels rare in X-Wing. Feels like an early lead is usually held throughout. Triple Tactician Wookiees (C-3PO Lowhhrick + 2 Lib) vs Gunner/Krennic Vermiel, PTL/ASLAM/Harpoon Rho, and Rebel Captive/ISB Scarif Reaper. Lot of lead changes. One Lib got Harpooned round one, and the other flew over a rock, so no reinforce. However, next round was better for me. Vermiel bumped, and I was able to pour in some damage, without taking too many hits in return. 3rd round of actual combat, Vermiel has no shot and bites it. Both of my Liberators are kinda hurting, though. Slow arcing turnarounds, and I do some reasonable damage to the SBP (not quite enough, though), but the Rho is able to pick off my PS 3s one at a time. With SLAM and Ailerons, my opponent perhaps could just run from me, but I'm prepared to move in on him with Lowhhrick. He's got wide arcs, and I think it'll be hard to flee. But he turns back in on me. Range 2 on the Rho, Range 3 on the SBP, but I fire and take out the SBP. Rho vs Lowhhrick. Then I guess wrong. He SLAMs one way when I had the other direction dialed in. My best chance to get arc lost, consistent 2 evades a turn won't really cut it against Harpoons every round. However, my opponent is a great local guy, won his first SC, so grats to him.

Round 5, Day 1B, Worlds 2018. Going from being tabled to winning 100-47 in the span of about 90 seconds.

Second last year in Gaming vs Cancer is probably the best I've felt after a day's gaming, running Guri, Fenn, Talonbane just after Guns for Hire dropped.

Intensity Guri is still my favourite single ship in 1e.

Winning a competitive game for the first time, especially because I lost half my list in the first round of combat (rolled all blanks on my green dice, 5 times).

Came back to win by a single hit point, and a lot of it was down to almost perfect flying of my other ship.

Do tell, did the dice go your way, did you pull some crazy maneuvering, what happened?

Will always and forever be Wave 7 (post t-70 and FO release) store championship

Step 1.) Make last minute list with Deathrain while taking public transit

Step 2.) First round loss to public transit

Step 3.) End up perfectly countering the Palp ace/brobot/rebel Regen meta with a ****** PUNISHER

And taking the gold

Even after Omega Leader got ******* oneshot by an unmodified brobot hlc (remember, kids, if you can't mod dice you can't flip your hlc crits back to hits!)

It was some jank like AC Corrector, seismics, conners Deathrain + Vi eu ATC Vader + juke relay Omega

****, just Deathrain in general was the ****** best experience

Never been more proud of a ship, nor more excited to put it back on the table in 2nd Ed

Beating 4 Z-95s with Vader to win a System Open.

Flying against a scum bomb list before the Scurrg came out. Andrasta Firespray with Proximity Mines and Cluster Mines and two Bomb Loadout, extra munitions Y-wings, with Proximity Mines. My opponent brought the 3 biggest rocks and, after some good rock placement and very nice flying, managed to drop all of his Proximity mines perfectly between the rocks. There was no way to get from one side of the mat to the other without flying through a rock or a bomb... except one diagonal path that the Firespray was flying, just waiting for me.

So I flew over the rocks. :) After some back and forth, I ended up winning a close game without setting off any of the 5 Proximity Mines (though between us, we managed to fly three different ships through the cluster mines, one mine per ship). By the end of the game, there were three or four people standing around watching, waiting to see what the ships would be destroyed by first: the Mines, the Rocks or weapons fire.

It was awesome.

One of my favorite memories is going to Spanish Nationals last year, completely sure i was gonna lose all games, since Denym had just been nerfed and i had very few games with Twin Shadows (had also been completely trashed in a tournament the weekend before), and getting to second place.

Another is in my first regional, and making the top 8 for 1 point of MoV with paratanis all over the place. Also where i got my first shiny dice.

In all honesty, besides all the bad things V1 had, I have alot of fond memories of it, including the people i played with and met.

First game I ever played with a mate who had only played one or two game.

I had a list which included Dengar, he had some list with a Decimator.

After some initial jousting and ship removal it was down to those two.

Now stay with me here we had just started playing.

We circled the board for ages trying to get front firing arcs on each other until one of us won out eventually.

After the game we are both looking at the ships and bases and one of us said "what does that circle with and arrow thing mean"

Quick scramble to read the rules - oh I think those ships both have a 360 turret arc.

We both laughed and agreed to the fact we were complete idiots.

Very funny stuff.

My favorite 1.0 memory was Adepticon this year. I couldn’t believe all the fun times and great players I got to interact with. I saw everything from meta (ghost fenn) to complete gonzo oddball builds, and I even had a solid run against some genuine top notch players I recognized from podcasts reading off tournament results (luck I assure you).

I flew Kylo + deadeye RhoBoats. It will always hold a soft spot for me.

Pulling a second place finish at a relatively large Regional with a list developed playing against a total of four other players at my two tiny local FLGS's. I really had no idea what I was doing, and had a great deal of fun surprising my very worthy opponents over the course of two days. And the sparkly dice from that tournament - looking at them makes me stupidly happy.

I played in a grand total of 3 Epic tournaments, one of which was Team Epic. Those were by far the best memories I have of playing in tournaments.

Also getting 10th place out of 43 at a Store Championship with 4 TIE strikers and Doom Shuttle. That's the best I've ever done in a large competitive environment, and it was a BLAST playing with those ships!

Store Championship, not a regional.

Winning my Store Championship. It was the first time I ever played X-Wing against real flesh and blood opponents. And it was the first time meeting that group of people. They were great. Made me feel welcome and that helped calm my nerves.

I ran a Palp Aces with Kenkirk Deci and Vader. That was when it first came out.

Later that night I was in the Emergency Room with a severe case of kidney stones.

What a Great Day.

Ah still remember the days of early thug life where unsuspected enemies fell trap into the slaughterhouse of four times TLT..

In no particular order:

January, 2013 - Realizing, as I practiced slaloming an A-wing through a labyrinth of rocks, that skill really mattered in this game, and that practice at maneuvering actually resulted in getting better at maneuvering.

Regionals, 2014 - Flying extremely well in my first major tourney (and maybe my third tourney period), but nearly dropping due to really unfavorable variance in two games. The tourney organizers pointed out to me that my two losses were to the players currently ranked 1st and 2nd. (SoS was the tiebreaker back then.) I stuck with it, won my next two games, and ended up 6th after Swiss, collecting sweet transparent Regionals dice.

Some vague time, 2016 - Discovering HotAC.

Realizing that when playing whether casually or competitively, as long as I was playing what I like I’d enjoy the game. Rey and Nora served me well in 1.0 hers to more fun in 2.0

Losing a 3-hour store championship final. Truly epic game.

One of my locals, along with some others pitching in, surprising me with a 2016 System Open Aurebesh BB-8 at Campaign Against Cancer this year.
