Am I mistaken...

...or are the STAR WARS games made by FFG the only STAR WARS content that's any good at the moment?

I mean EA hasn't done anything with their license, and the movies seem to displease a lot of people... Rebels ended. Oh Clone Wars returns, so that might be good, if you're willing to subscribe to Disney's new streaming service...

There's a great deal of good stuff to read in print or in electronic formats. Much of it is > 5 years old.

The original SWTOR class stories are still good and free to play.

I was disappointed with 8, but while Solo wasn't great it was solid I thought. Hope springs eternal for 9. I've zero interest in Resistance, but the rumors of Favereau's series being on Mandalore post Return has potential.

An opinion I can share.

Actually, I wasn't really surprised to see Disney pulling the plug from just about every side movie or other big project after the Solo debacle. As if the high-ups there punish the people for boycotting Solo, when they could have been (should have been?) boycotting 9, to show they want good, coherent trilogies instead of a trilogy where writing on the next part only started once the previous part was finished. There is admittance that this trilogy of 7, 8, and 9 wasn't planned out in advance. On to Solo. Agree or disagree about Alden Ehrenreich. Love or hate Glover and his Leet-droid. (More such examples can easily be given.) But I left the theatre with a whole lot more satisfaction of seeing a fun movie than I did at The Last Jedi.

On to the contents of FFG Star Wars. With the exception of Dawn of Rebellion and the Force Awakens Beginner Game, everything is written from the perspective of the Rebellion Era, even the fringe material. And Dawn can be seen as info on the Dark Times, going into the Rebellion Era. Rise of the Separatists is the first source book anounced to be in a different 'era'. Barely 20 years before the rebellion. I can't comment on the Force Awakens beginner game, as I don't have that. However, assuming it is like the other beginner games, there will be very little info on the Awakens-era.

Point is, if FFG were to be forced to use material from other Star Wars eras (KOTOR, Force Awakes/Last Jedi), would that material reflect the quality (or lack thereof, depending on opinion) of the source material? The only way to truly know, is to see what happens if FFG indeed puts out a 7-8-9 era sourcebook. Or a Legends sourcebook about the New Jedi Order era (if that were even possible under current Disney licencing).

It is for me. I really enjoyed Solo but couldn't stomach TLJ. I don't really care about IX at this point. The Old Republic doesn't do anything or me because it has a feel problem in the iterations I have seen so far: it either rips off the newer eras and gets a good feel but makes no sense as to why it's the same stuff but thousands of years earlier, or it's its own thing and is quasi-star wars. To me the Rebellion Era is the best one so far, and FFG focused on that which makes me happy.

When did Disney pull the plug on the side movies??

Other people’s opinions aside, I enjoyed both Rogue One & Solo far more than the 2 sequels so far!

Being a GM & writing my own stuff I think the Star Wars universe holds unlimited potential for new stories that include new characters That are not connected to any of the current films. After all as GMs & players that’s what we do week in week out... So if we can do it then surely some highly paid team of story/script writers can pull it together ?

There was a story that said they had. Then Disney denied it. Then there was an interview with a production designer who said a Tatooine project had been shelved.

Whether they officially say they've pumped the brakes is irrelevant. We had a teaser for Rogue 1 20 months before it premiered. They announced development of Solo in July of 2015. We have precisely zero confirmation, announcements and teasers for anything past 9 as of right now, call it a pause or a lack of information, tomato tomatoe imo, same F-ing thing.

Well it’s a relief they’ve not been officially pulled then.

Would be a **** of a waste in my humble opinion!

What, I can’t refer to the place (where Christian religion) states that the devil lives without it getting the star treatment???

Well ***, ****, ****!!!

I would find it hard to swallow they wouldn't do more. I don't find it hard to believe they would have a little pause and sit down to do a bit more roundtable scripting and storyboarding than you could fit on a cocktail napkin...

Has anyone read/watched/played every Legends thing in existence?

Probably, but that’s an extremely small percent of fans. So, unless you’re one of those, then there is indeed plenty of good Star Wars stuff out there.

You will find that whether or not you are mistaken - just like many of the truths we cling to - depends greatly on your point of view.

From my Certain Point of View, yes, you are greatly mistaken.

You are mistaken.

Or not.

It's all a matter of taste.

I think Disney's doing well with the license.
The movies, overall, are well done. I didn't like TLJ much, but that's not for any of the reasons the haters do.
The books are good enough, I'd say. To be honest, I've never held Star Wars books in high regard. They've always been "easy to read" and geared at a largely younger audience (teens and up). But the new Disney books are largely following those guidelines too.
The comics are great, for the most part. A personal favorite is Dr Aphra. The Vader comics are great too, IMHO.
I really don't like the TV-shows. Rebels (and before that Clone Wars) were way too much geared to young kids for me to like them. I suppose I want more mature content now that I'm older (and I also vehemently dislike pandering to the idea that kids need things to be dumbed-down. Working with kids for the last 20 years has taught me that they really don't need their shows dumbed-down). But quality wise, I suppose they're well done.
EA has really let us down (but that's hardly surprising, given their track record), and I hope Disney pulls the license from them and starts their own gaming division.

Heck.

H E double hockeysticks won't work, though.

All the novels by Claudia Gray are excellent. Some of the other recent ones are decent.

I’m currently listening to the audiobook of Last Shot.

I must say, I was especially entertained by both the very idea of an Ewok slicer and by Han’s initial encounter with the Gungan security guard.

The comics right now are all stellar. The novels aren't too bad (though we've hit a dry spell when it comes to books), we know there's another game or two in development, Battlefront II is getting Grievous in October, Obi-Wan in November, and Anakin & Dooku in the winter, Resistance is starting October 7th, and we're getting two Star Wars shows with Disney's streaming service. I'd say Star Wars is doing pretty good right now.

Wow, that is completely unprecedented . EA is so amazing!

The only thing I can objectively say is outright terrible is everything EA has been doing with the Star Wars license since after the initial release of TOR, everything else I've viewed since I'd say has been pretty freaking good.

I'll agree that most of the video games aren't very good, but otherwise I'm in disagreement. I've enjoyed all the movies, and the TV shows. I admit I haven't read the books or comics so I can't speak to those. In general, I'm content with the current state of Star Wars stuff.

Star wars 7 was pure garbage. Most people I know in different circle of life seem to agree that it wasn't great but not to my extent. Have a friend who though there was potential.

From the parody of Hitler, to the poor script where everyone has the force and use it as they want, to the mediocre actors performance, the only light was the performance of Harrison Ford where it seemed to upgrade everyone around him.

Star wars 8, I will never see. The friend who though of the potential of 7, for the first time had to concede that it was terribly poor....that there was few good sequence but that couldn't over come the bad the movie keep pushing....I mean, apparently they made something worse than Jar Jar Binks ....I mean something must be wrong in the head of the person who scripted that...

Rogue One, just awesome, fits perfectly well with the first 2 trilogy and loved it.....my guess is that It must have been scripted before Disney bought the Franchise....

Solo, the opinion seem so mixed that I have no interest in seeing the movie...

What I don't get is why they can't make more games like KOTOR and Jedi Academy. I get these were written when everybody bought their game and now subscriptions are a thing, but they still made a LOT of money, people would eat it up.

The Marvel comic books range from Great to Above Average. With the exception of the current Lando mini-series which suffers from being boring, they've all been winners in my book.

I broke my ban on reading tie-in novels and the current post-Disney crop have all been mostly fine with a few stand-outs. None of them are bad in the way SW books were bad in the late '90s. At worst, they're a little on the safe and dull side, though, surprisingly enough, the Battlefield video game tie-in novel was really engaging. I suspect this trend of dullness and unimportant side-stories will continue until after Episode IX releases and authors have some more freedom to explore Luke Skywalker and the Force post- Return of the Jedi.

From the perspective of giving gamemasters good tools to run good tabletop games, the FFG RPG line has been solid. The rules are effective and the supplements actually provide useful new bits and suggestions for both players and GMs. But from a world-building perspective, they've really been a dud, post-Disney. On the one hand, I like that the EU was wiped away and creators have a fresh slate to pick-and-choose Legends material to incorporate into new canon. On the other, I really, really liked Suns of Fortune and Lords of Nal Hutta and, after what's come out recently, I'm worried that I'll never see an interesting thematic setting book again. Though I liked parts of it, the first Era book didn't exactly knock my socks off. Half of it was dedicated to cross-over brand appeal, with its providing stats for major characters and the Death Star. That's great if you want to simulate Ahsoka fighting Darth Vader but for those of us who are trying to create new stories with new characters, which I suspect is most gaming tables, it's useless filler.
