Legion with no Core Set?

By RedLeader23, in Star Wars: Legion

I am thinking of getting into Legion (I have already got X-wing) but I have a small budget so I was thinking if It would be possible to play with no Core Set. Would it work if you brought the dice pack and movement/ range ruler pack and a few expansions? Would I also need to buy more tokens, etc.

I think the only unique thing in the core set is the Round counter, which you don't really need if you have a normal D6 handy.

That said, I think the core set is your best value for building up armies. I think folks are still swapping factions out of the core set on Reddit and Facebook?

Core set is by far the cheapest way to get into the game. Just do the math on the expansion packs and you’ll see.

If you know you want to stick with playing one side (Imperials or Rebels) all the better bc you can sell the other half on eBay or trade with someone locally.

Plus, core sets remains the only way to get Luke and Vader (unless you buy them on eBay.)

My advice: buy the core set, sell the stuff you don’t want and use that money to start fleshing out the rest of your army with expansions.

The core set is also the only way to get the generic command cards, and 80% of the mission/condition/deployment cards. Also, it is just a good value.

Ah! Knew I forgot something!

Just the dice and range/movement tools on their own costs $30. Add the barricades and you're up to $45. Even if you just want to play one faction you're getting three $25 expansions and a commander you can't otherwise purchase for $45, not to mention the battle decks.

It’s not even the generic command cards (you could run 2 commanders)...

its STANDING ORDERS that you need from the core...

4 pip cards only in the core set.

You can easily pick up standing orders somewhere. I have 4 copies.

Oh, I'm sure you can.

But whenever someone asks "Can I do this without buying a core set?" - The assumption should be "Can I do this legitimately without resorting to parting out or ebaying?"

I give the option for 3rd party Store equivelant most of the time... But again, with the exception of essentially the Standing Orders card... You can.

Same as with Armada... Apart from the Damage Deck, you can get everything else essentially either straight legit purchase, or in the case of the Range/Distance Ruler, 3rd Party.

It's possible, it just matters how illegitimate you want to go, and how many friends you have. Me? I have none :D

I think it’s harder to do it without a core. 2 core sets is the cheapest way.

Then you can't afford NOT to buy the core set. Wait a little while and save up. It's $72 free shipping on Amazon I think, though I only buy from my favorite store.

Dice, rulers, and 1 squad each of rebels and Imperials will cost you... $80. Or you could put that $80 into the core set and get two squads, a hero and a vehicle for both sides. Not to mention the cards, counters etc. The core set multiplies your dollars.

I think 2 core sets and Leia is the cheapest way to get a pair of 800 point armies.

As stated above the Core Set is truly the way to go. For what you get versus what you would be missing without a Core Set and the breakdown cost of buying everything you would need separately, it really is the best value.

You can also find it online at places like Cool Stuff Inc for about $76.00 and that is brand new. That is a significant savings from $99.00. That gives you enough savings to buy an expansion or a few commanders. As also stated before selling/trading a faction if you never plan to run them can also help towards building your army.

Thanks for the awnsers, they are very helpful. I think I may buy the Core Set and sell of the Imperial stuff as I will be playing Rebel.

Trade it for someone's core set rebels! It's the inexpensive route and loads of squads is very useful in-game. Plus AT-RT's look like metal tauntauns.

Plus it gives you a do-over if you really mess up on Luke, or you can paint one as ESB one as ROTJ, etc.

I have a rebel core set half id trade for imps

I have seen a lot of parting out on ebay thay may be cheapee than buying the core. The first buy in is probably the biggest then it's just a commander and or squad here or there spread over a couple months. I think they're slowing down as well

Can you explain why you think not getting a Core set will save you money? It's by far the most economical way to get anything that's in the box.

I previously thought that it could save money as I could instead buy a dice pack and a range ruler/ movement tools kit and then buy a few expansions.

But now after reading the comments on this thread I’ve realised that it’s much better to get the Core Set.

Go to ebay, buy used. Legion isn't cheap and isn't x-wing. The best thing to do actually is barrow someone's army and play a few games. See if you even like it. You may want to put that money back into X-Wing, which just got very expensive.

When wondering if you should get a Core Set, just ask the Emperor:
