Rank the Disney-era Star Wars Films

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Rogue One- It is number 1 on the Disney side of things, and number 3 overall. (Beating out The Return of the Jedi.) I think this film proves what we already have known, Star Wars is really about the Villains.

Solo- A fun film, but forgettable. Nothing really caught my imagination. Everything was fairly monotone. Out of the planets they visited, none of them really stand out. But still, I want to watch it again.

Force Awakens- The first act is awesome, and it goes down hill from their. The introduction of Rey and Kylo Ren is great. But where did Star Killer base come from? (The Death Star was the high concept in ANH, Star Killer base just sorta pops up in the final act.) While I see Force Awakens as majority flawed, I still enjoy it more than the prequels.

The Last Jedi- I admit I am a hater. Granted, there are some really good scenes in the film, Crait was one of the best planet concepts in the franchise to date. I enjoyed trying to incorporate some of KotOR II force concepts into the film. (However, it was the wrong character and it never followed through and explored the thoughts.) I will argue to this day, The Last Jedi's greatest failure was the Villains, or the lack of a serious Villain. Disney Marvelized the villains, to make them a punchline. (Snoke being the the exception, but we all know what happened.) The next biggest flaw for me is the multiple breaks of suspension of disbelief. Then there are all the little things ...

I can agree with that, however, I almost feel like the Vader scene was actually unneccesary too. It seems more like it was put there to appease Vader fanboys TBH.

(that being said as someone who loves all four of these movies ❤️ )

Worked for me :P Pretty lukewarm on the movie on a whole, but the whole finale is supreme and that scene for me is the cherry on top.

Yup. This was pretty much the entire cinema I was in:

Edit: and this:

For me that finale is one of the best moments in the entire franchise. Definitely Top 10.

Heh, I feel like just showing her back would have worked better. We didn't need to see her face to know that this is Leia. I think it was too obvious she was cgi, it distracted me from the moment. But I also don't like that she there in the first place. I would have prefered if there was no space battle at all, it felt, like the Vader scene, that it was there only to please fan.

Movie still good though.

1) TLJ

2) TLJ

3) TLJ

4) The Rest

TFA, R1 and Solo are all on a par with me.

TFA, was unoriginal, R1 had uninteresting leads who were unable to gain any connection with the viewer, and Solo was poorly edited and thus incoherent at times (probably due to all the reshoots and change of director).

TLJ is last because 2/3rds of the movie is simply awful.

1. Rogue One

2. Solo

All the way down. eps VII and VIII.

#1 - Rogue One - I love this movie. It wasn't perfect but it was the first movie Star Wars movie in 36 years that felt close to the tone and aesthetic of ANH and TESB and got rid of the juvenile humor and goofy aliens that Lucas introduced in ROTJ and got worse in the prequels.

#2 - The Force Awakens - I liked it. If it didn't rehash the story from ANH and they hadn't turned Rey into a hyper-competent feminist superhero then I might have loved it. But at least it introduced some interesting characters and mysteries that made me want to see the next movie.

#3 - Solo - I didn't see Solo. Wait. What?! Then why have I rated it #3? Because it can't possibly be worse than...

#8342 - The Last Jedi - This steaming pile of poo has single handedly killed what was my growing interest in the Star Wars universe. It is easily the worst Star Wars movie, below even the prequels and every other movie I have ever seen or will see in the future.

1) Rogue One - easily the best, the closest we're likely to get to another original trilogy film.

=2) The Force Awakens & The Last Jedi - too hard to separate them as I liked both but they are also flawed and in different ways which makes choosing between them harder. TFA a bit too much of a retread of earlier films, whilst TLJ swung too much the other way.

Unrated - Solo, as I've not seen it yet.

1. The Force Awakens (my favourite Star Wars film)

2. Rogue One (probably my #3 Star Wars film)

3. Solo: A Star Wars Story (inoffensive)

4. The Last Jedi (maybe my least favourite Star Wars film)

See, I quite enjoyed The Force Awakens - up to a point. And I think that point was the introduction of Starkiller Base. I was invested in Rey trying to return BB8 to the Resistance, and Finn trying to escape the First Order. The atmospheric fighter combat was great. And the underlying narrative of each side trying to track down Luke was intriguing.

But then the third act abandoned all that and ended up being about another planet killing superweapon, and that's when it started to lose me.

1 - Rogue One
2 - The Last Jedi
3 - The Force Awakens
4 - Solo

Rogue one was a great movie set in my favorite fictional universe. The Last Jedi was a good movie that broke the mold of Star Wars and subverted expectations. The Force Awakens was a really fun movie that was a great way of bringing back Star Wars, but it was ultimately a retelling of A New Hope which places it lower on the list. Solo wasn't bad, but I just had trouble getting into the movie the way I did with the rest of them.

You do realize TLJ is a retelling of ESB, right?

Space chase without light speed...check

Rebel base on white planet being invaded by imperial walkers.....check

Jedi hopeful looking for famed jedi master on remote planet.....check.

Heroes looking for assistance from a scoundrel that could help/double cross them....check.

The order in which they happen is different but still the same four acts as ESB.

Hmm, I actually find it quite hard to rank them. I actually think they're all good films, but for different reasons as they exhibit different flaws.

1: Rogue One - A proper film of two halves. The first is somewhat ponderous and doesn't really hit the mark. The second half is a real full throttle battle that is thoroughly engaging and well done. I didn't think Jyn was a great character, but K2-SO was brilliant and I loved Tarkin's role in the film. When I saw it at the cinema, as soon as it finished I went home and watched Episode IV.

2: The Last Jedi - I understand there are plenty of people out there who don't like it, I even understand their reasons. I just don't agree with them. I liked what they were aiming for. It's not perfect by any stretch (none of the four are) - I didn't like Rose's character and I felt bad for Finn with the story he was given. Canto Bight didn't work, nor did their encounter with Phasma. Hux was treated fairly badly too, going from a devout, foaming fanatic to some dodgy pantomime villain; I hope this is rectified in IX.

I did love what they did with Luke, Rey and Kylo though. It's also the best cinematic experience of the four Disney films and it was beautifully shot. The scenes on Crait, the duel in the throne room and the shots on the Jedi island were magnificent. I really enjoyed Yoda's cameo and Luke's fight with Kylo at the end. Poe also became a much more interesting character.

3: Solo - It's not a film I wanted and the troubled production really had me worried. However I think Ron Howard did a tremendous job all things considered - he even got a reasonable performance out of Emilia Clarke!

It disappointed me because (like the Lord of The Rings films) it takes things that I have imagined in my head and changes them. Those are things I can't really get back now. However, I thought Alden Ehrenreich was a good Solo in the end. Not Ford good, but good nonetheless. Chewie was also excellent and it was an enjoyable film to sit through in the end. With the set up at the end, I'd be more than happy to see a sequel.

4: The Force Awakens - I feel like it's an inverse Rogue One. The first half is excellent and really reboots the Star Wars franchise, I felt invested in it. The Starkiller Base comes along and ruins the whole thing frankly. There are some excellent sequences though, I love Poe soloing a whole bunch of FO pilots and Maz's place (That is indeed one **** of a pilot!), I really like how they handled Han's death (my two kids were hilarious, one was crying and the other was jumping with joy saying "Chewie's so ANGRY!" ? ) and I actually liked Rey.

The Last Jedi
SOLO
The Force Awakens
Rogue One

#1 Solo

#2 Rogue One

#3 The Force Awakens

#4 Staring at a blank screen for two hours while eating yesterday's popcorn.

#5 The Last Jedi

Solo brought a lot of life to the Star Wars universe, such as showing ground war from the eyes of the Imperial grunts, criminal organizations besides the Hutts, and overall was a fun heist movie while at the same time showing elements of the GCW starting to form. Rogue One did much of the same with showing the GCW from the eyes of grunts, like those fighting on Jedha and Scarif, and toeing into Terrorism vs Rebellion. I like seeing more of the Star Wars universe being fleshed out besides the Jedi and Skywalker story. The Force Awakens was a serviceable SW movie, but overall it took way too much from A New Hope. The Last Jedi's writer/director tried to be clever but really just **** the bed and left the story in a worse place. I'm am interested in seeing how Episode 9 can try to salvage the story.

1# Solo! I loved it and i'm super super sad that it didn't make profit. I'll be buying a blue ray despite me not buyig psychical copies just to show them how much i loved the movie. It had the spirit of star wars and Alden is the (second) perfect Han Solo.

2# Rogue One. Great but felt too heavy for me, it felt like a book material. I still enjoyed it a lot and it was a worthwile addiction to the universe

3# The last jedi - a bad movie but at least it tried to reinvent somethings, be ambitious. I respect rian for that

4# the force awakens. The movie is **** and 50% of tlj flaws exist only because of this piece of garbage. It reverted character development of all ot characters and political situation is back to evil tyranny vs rebels, nothing absolutely nothing new happened, the movie is empty shell and a cashgrab. Tlj is masterpiece compared to this, tlj tried to correct this piece of s... but it was impossible.

1. Rogue One - This is arguably the only Star Wars movie Disney has done. It plays within the established "rules" of the universe, for the most part. The characters are shallow, but serviceable for a war movie, so we can root for them. That's all we needed. Nobody complained we didn't know enough about the guys in Saving Private Ryan. You know they are good guys, and you know they have a military mission. I actually liked most of them aside from Captain Aimbot's machinegun laser. Krennic makes a decent villain. The editing is a complete mess, likely due to the reshoots, directorial change, and to make room for two pointless Darth Vader scenes. Still, this movie looks and feels like Star Wars, while still treading a bit of slightly new ground by shifting from the Space Opera to the War Adventure genre. Didn't mind CG-Tarkin because of the demand for the character's screen time. CG-Leia was unnecessary; she could have been a look-alike actress with her one line dubbed in. The third act is amazing aside from the way the ending was constructed. I liked the choice to be daring and kill off all the protagonists. I've watched Rogue One, in its entirety, several times, and it continues to be enjoyable. Thought it was a good sign for future Disney properties... oh well.

3. Solo - This movie is pretty dumb, and it features Star Wars' second-worst character ever. Enjoyed it the one time I saw it, but have little interest in ever seeing it again. But, in its favor, it is a lot of fun to watch, and the non-Emilia Clarke members of the cast are good in their roles. Like Rogue One, this mostly looks and feels like Star Wars. As long as you don't think too much about it, or try to figure out how it fits into the Star Wars canon, Solo serves up entertainment, and a plot that mostly makes sense. Hyperfuel... stupid. Neo-Rebels... stupid. Space Kraken getting sucked into the one thing you'd assume it would be careful to stay away from... stupid. Droid Rights nonsense... stupid. Oh look, Darth Maul, and his lightsaber! ? But still, Donald Glover, Woody, Alden Ehrenwhatever, they push the movie along with a certain amount of charm. Though Ehrenwhatever is a little short for a stormtrooper Han Solo; whatever, small gripe.

7. The Force Awakens - This is a poor movie by most any measure. The plot functions entirely on convenience. Nothing in the movie past the first two or three scenes has a functional cause-and-effect relationship. The plot literally just coasts along on coincidence, right up until the end when R2D2 wakes up to trigger the plot for the sequel. The characters are flat and uninteresting. Rey is especially bad, with no character arc, no adversity, and no personality. Finn is okay. Poe is sorta-interesting, but he survives the film via Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure gimmick, which is hilarious, but not in a good way. Kylo Ren is a fairly weak villain, but Adam Driver's performance is solid... when the script isn't failing him. There's no world-building; it just deconstructs everything from the OT and then replaces it with... nothing. A Republic we don't know anything about, which is okay because it dies. An Empire First Order that we don't know anything about, other than apparently it's the remnants of the Empire, somehow displaced by a Republic with no military... wait, what? People can see distant space lasers travel across the sky in real time? But, the good news is, it isn't like we hadn't already seen all these plot elements before and it was fresh and original... Oh. Wait.

13. The Last Jedi - Is it even worth bashing this movie any more than has already been done? It deconstructs the entire Star Wars mythology, but not in any way that is good. The story is boring and bafflingly dumb; oh, and it's just The Empire Strikes Back remixed with a ridiculously slow real-time chase. The run time is at least 30 minutes too long. The humor is terrible; the jokes being neither funny, nor well-timed, and usually inappropriate to the scene. The villains are comically stupid and ragey, even by the ridiculous HeyLookNatzees! standards of The Force Awakens. The "heroes" are mostly as stupid as the villains, and there is little to no character development. This movie is terrible from start to finish, with no redeeming qualities.

Should we include The Black Hole as a Disney Star Wars movie maybe?

#1 Rogue one
A movie that would easily be in the top 3 of all Star Wars movies ever.

#2 Solo
A star wars themed space western with not overly exciting plot or anything, but I saw some brilliant acting, namely Donald Glover!

Nothing else in the Disney era worth's to be entered in the ranking charts for me.

For me:

1. The Force Awakens is easily the best star wars movie ever; Because it is the first movie my son went to. He sat wide eyed with excitement through the whole thing. Nothing anyone can say will EVER change how I feel about the movie.

2. The Last Jedi. What was done with Luke, my childhood hero was great. He was flawed, and full of self doubt. I really enjoyed everything in the movie.

3. Solo - while not an important film, it was fun. My only gripe was the film could have been all new characters and it would have been just as good.

4. Rogue One - It was a good story and introduced the shades of grey and moral ambiguity that many want in star wars. Indeed it shows that we can have all these different stories and all told in different styles. Very good villain.

It's difficult to say as all of them are good and competently made but none are great.

so,

1-2. Rogue One/The Last Jedi

3. The Force Awakens

4. Solo
