In-play card organising solutions for 2e

By thespaceinvader, in X-Wing

So, these https://www.chaoscards.co.uk/accessories-c1/binders-pocket-pages-c6/ultimate-guard-14-pocket-a5-standard-size-mini-american-compact-pages-10-pages-black-p134578 are a great solution for keeping cards together for 1e, but for 2e similar pages are going to waste a lot of table space given that the cards are designed to tuck underneat one another. Has anyone seen any solutions on sale/come up with any good bodges from easily accessible components yet?

I'm looking for that too!

I hate card binders. I'm going to use Broken Token card boxes.

You know, I’ve always just assumed that card binders were the only way to handle this solution.... until now.

With how the upgrade cards always require reorganization every single new expansion (if you are OCD enough to have them sorted by upgrade type and alphabetized), I am suddenly really liking that card box you mentioned. That way I just go to the crew (for example) and can sift through it to get the one I need.

i used binders in 1.0 and just gave up on alphabetized cards, but that made it fun when trying to find something I hadn’t used in a while.

I think I may keep binders for pilots in 2.0, but I am certainly interested in that card box now. :)

I'm not talking about storage. I'm talking about some solution to keep you list tidy, together, and easy to move from table to table during tournaments/game nights.

If I'm reading their site correctly, these organizers go inside of the games original cardboard box?

I’m already missing the smaller upgrade cards. These new ones take up too much real estate.

On the flip side, I’m using less upgrades in 2.0 than 1.0 and often running naked ships.

Still wish they were mini- American size.

I've been keeping all pilot cards in a sleeve, then throwing in whatever upgrades it had in the same sleeve. It works, but does require a little fiddling during setup to pull them out and arrange them. I'd like to see something more plug and play.

I've been using their stuff for a few years. Full note, they have sponsored some of our stuff. It was after I asked, though, as I love their product. So, full disclosure.

They make all sorts of containers for different games, but primarily board games. They have built many of these to fit in the box for the games.

I don't use their separators as they take up some room. I found I make my own out of manilla folders (card stock). You can separate them any way you feel. I do generic crew together, but then separate faction crew into their own sections. I also put Talents in by point values, too. Just make the separators a little taller. You can just write what they are or print it off. If you print them off you can use graphics for icons, too. Put them in MS Word and just print off one sheet. Then glue onto cardstock.

Sir Willis designed his own to be made from foamcore. I used his free pdf for my separators. Excellent stuff.

I fully agree on the binders and organization efforts. I hate it.

Yeah, that's my hope. I've seen someone make something with side-loader file pages and a comb binder, but it's super fiddly. I guess you could do similar with a ring binder but it would be really BIG....

Also, the cardboard boxes they gave out as prizes the first couple of years are also good.

Both these and Broken Token fit inside the top of the Plano cases.

For in-game organization solutions, I picked up a pack of binding bars from Office Depot for like $5 (just look in the report covers section). They’re the long clips used to hold together School reports so they look fancy. Just slide your cards in and it keeps them all together for easy organization and transportation.

I’ll edit in a picture when I get some time.

I wish the guys that made the flight deck would make another one with vertical slots for side loading upgrade cards. They are now perfect for this given all the extra real estate that the sideways cards have. You could still use the very top slot for the pilot card.

I guess in the meantime you could use or cut pages that should hold a long mailing envelope. Cards will probably slide a little too much though for practical use.

I think I know the things you mean, that's a good shout.

Does mean sleeving everything though which I'm loathe to do.

Nope, no sleeves required. You’ll see what I mean when I get home from work and can post a picture

Sleeving for spill protection mostly.

Depending on how many upgrade cards per ship ... Ultra Pro 4-pocket pages. Put a ship card and up to three upgrades, or two ships with one upgrade each, or four ships, and throw them down. Easy set up; easy to keep a list together; throw in a binder when done.

I worked at the Broken Token for four years as a designer. Most of the solutions they provide are for specific games. The exceptions are the token boxes and the high capacity card cases.

I plan on using my Flight Deck unless I come up with anything better soon. I would like to print alt-art versions of all the upgrades at some point that are the size of the current 1.0 mini upgrade cards (by removing the useless sides of the cards that take up so much space for no reason), so if I do that then the Flight Deck will still be a good option. I do feel like the bigger problem now isn't the sideways cards but that so many cards have charges or force tokens that'll be kept on them. Anything with extra munitions in 1.0 was already annoying to use in conjunction with the Flight Deck.

I tried uploading my picture but it won't upload, no matter how I try formatting or resizing the image. Frustrating.

The FFG forum doesn't like you uploading your own photos, I've found. Try uploading elsewhere and linking across :)

It was a card carrier/display. I've used mine for every game of X-Wing that I've played since I got it and greatly prefer it to having a bunch of cards on the table in the space between the mat and myself, which is how the tables are set up at the stores I play at. The Flight Deck just stands in the narrow space to the side of the mat on my side and the only things in front of me are my dials and templates.

Thanks. I missed seeing that one. Seems like it obscures the text on upgrades and would make it hard for your opponent to glance over at your squad, but super convenient for carrying from table to table.

I used a standard Ultra Pro 9 pocket page. I then cut off the bottom row and the "3-ring" side" so it's a 3x2 pocket "small page". Holds my pilot +5 upgrades. I fold these in half and they transport pretty easily.

The cut off 3-slot row I use for putting naked pilot cards. I'll try to take a picture when I get home to show it.
