Hello all. Is this game any good?

By Oregon PinkRose, in Talisman

I hoped my title would catch some attention.

I love this game. I remember playing it a few times back with 2nd edition and now have the revised 4th, with all official expansion so far.

I have found the download area of talismanisland and my first set of questions is:

Which unofficial expansions do people use?

Which ones are "balanced"?

Which ones are used for "fun" games and which ones for more "serious" games?

Are there beginner and advanced unofficial expansions?

Thanks for any advise. And the great community. I've read much that has answered most of my questions so far.
I'm sure there will be more to come.

Hard questions to answer. You might find more fan-expansion users in the Home Brew area. Aside from my own creations, one of the more whimsical AND fun additions to any game has to be Mr. Broggers Toad King (the youngest players especially seem to love it). In the same area of NPCs for the game, you might try out Jon New's "Ice Queen" though it is best played with the commercial Frostmarch expansion.

If you're interested at all in adding more variation to space options (like additional ones for the City, Village, etc.), consider peeking at the Space Expanders pack. That one was group effort by a handful who hang out in the Home Brew section.

Any of these three can be tried without too much concern for balance, as they don't really affect any of the standard decks too much. Beyond these, others adding into the Adventure or Spell deck will have balance issues always, either correcting or exaggerating known imbalances in the decks. When it comes time for you to add commercial expansions (and you will), any innate balance is going to change anyway.

Thank you for replying.

What about all of your expansions? I am surprised you didn't promote those.

Is there someplace that explains the expansions without having to download them and read each FAQ?

2 quick questions from a solo game tonight:
Can you have both the Wild Horses & the Warhorse as Followers?

If you have 4 objects and you draw a 5th, can you use one, like the treasure map, before you have too many and have to ditch one?

My sig has links to where my expansions can be downloaded. Hale Gaming usually hosts any included PDF document singularly so it can be reviewed before downloading. Talisman Island usually has a synopsis on a mouseover. As to tooting my own horn, I figure once you go searching for stuff by other people I mention, you'll see mine anyway. All expansions from brewers here end up on Talisman Island, and Hale Gaming is a very new site just getting started.

Yes, as far as I know.

Nope, you have to ditch / one that you have in order to even pick up (let alone use) the new one... unless you have Mule or other Follower (or baggage) that let's you carry more than 4.

By the way, I am also in Oregon... and I'm wondering about your handle. Are you also an enthusiast of Rose wine (not made of roses, but the rose vinting process)?

Nope. I don't drink much wine.

The name comes from Pink, which is a color I love, because most people hate it. That Hot Pink colour, not the pastel pink type. And Rose, from living in the Rose City, Portland, and also from being born in Roseburg.

That about covers that.

Ah ha. I figured it had to be an actual rose, but was just wondering.

im in Rockaway Beach, Orygun. stop by for a game sometime. cool.gif

a question. do you guys feel like this is the best edition so far? i do. aplauso.gif

It's about even for its ups and downs to me. It's really not that far off of 2E. And I'm not talking about graphics on either point.

Yes,

A lot has been made better in this edition.

The regions has come back from third edition. i am very happy about that.

Players have more chance to cast spells, and FFG has use new idea's too ( fate, warlock cards, treasure cards etc gran_risa.gif

This will become the ultimate Talisman game demonio.gif

PS: But characters can still not become neutral in the game ( except with druid staff) sad.gif

And we want more different purchase cards, and so.. the list will grow on...

True, they are bringing in probably the better of the differences done for 3E. For me, Fate is a push when considered against other minor tweaks in the game.

I doubt we'll see many if any changes for becoming Neutral, at least commercial ones. The game has always been bi-polar. But hopefully we will see some additions to the Purchase deck, as it is the only deck that has had no additions so far.
